Ubuntu Server 24.04 LTS, released in April 2024, represents the latest Long Term Support iteration of Canonical's server-oriented Linux distribution. This version, supported until April 2029, offers a robust, secure, and flexible platform for enterprise-grade deployments and cloud infrastructure.
At its core, Ubuntu Server 24.04 LTS runs on the Linux kernel 6.x series, providing enhanced hardware support and improved performance. The distribution maintains its commitment to stability and reliability while incorporating cutting-edge features to meet modern server requirements.
Package management in Ubuntu Server 24.04 LTS continues to rely on the Advanced Package Tool (APT), known for its efficiency and ease of use. The inclusion of Snap package support offers an additional method for deploying self-contained applications, particularly useful in cloud and container environments.
Virtualization and containerization are key strengths of Ubuntu Server 24.04 LTS. It includes native support for KVM (Kernel-based Virtual Machine) for full virtualization, LXD for system containers, and seamless integration with Docker for application containers.
The offering is designed to meet the needs of businesses and individuals who want a robust, enterprise-grade server solution without the complexity of building it from scratch.

You pay by the hour based on the EC2 instance type you run. Each dimension maps to one instance size, so pricing scales with the compute, memory, and network capacity you choose. Smaller shared-CPU types like the t2 and t3 families sit at one end. General-purpose m3, m4, m5, m5a, m5d, m5n, m5ad, and m5dn families offer larger sizes, up to metal instances. Software cost is added on top of standard AWS infrastructure charges. You select the size that fits your workload and are billed only for the hours you use.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What do I actually receive when I launch one hourly instance of this listing?
You get a virtual machine running Ubuntu Server 24.04 LTS, sized to the EC2 instance type you select. After launch, you connect over SSH using a private key and the ubuntu login. Each instance type sets the CPU, memory, and network capacity available to you.
Am I charged when my instance is stopped or powered off?
The hourly software charge meters running time only. A fully stopped instance does not accrue software charges. Underlying AWS resources, such as storage attached to the stopped instance, may still incur standard AWS fees. You are billed for the hours the instance actually runs.
How does the hourly software charge relate to my AWS bill?
Two charges combine on one invoice. The software charge accrues per instance-hour for this listing. Standard AWS infrastructure charges for compute, storage, and data transfer apply separately. Larger instance types raise both the software and infrastructure portions, since they provide more compute and memory capacity.
