Dimensions summary
You pay by the hour for a running instance, with no upfront commitment. Pricing scales with the AWS EC2 instance type you choose. The options span several instance families: T2 and T3 for general-purpose and burstable workloads, M3, M4, and M5 for balanced compute, C3, C4, and C5 for compute-focused tasks, and R3, R4, and R5 for memory-heavy needs. Within each family, sizes range from nano and micro up to 2xlarge. You select the size to match your capacity and cost needs. Hourly billing lets you stop when the instance is not in use.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
The hourly rate covers the software running on the instance type you pick, plus maintenance support from the vendor. It does not include the underlying AWS compute charge, which AWS bills separately based on the same instance type. Both charges appear on your AWS invoice.
Software charges meter running time only. A stopped instance does not accrue hourly software fees. You may still pay AWS for attached storage while the instance is stopped. Restarting the instance resumes hourly software billing for the instance type you selected.
Each family suits a workload profile. T2 and T3 handle general-purpose and burstable tasks. M3, M4, and M5 balance compute and memory. C3, C4, and C5 focus on compute. R3, R4, and R5 target memory-heavy needs. Your rate follows the size you choose.
