Each unit is one running EC2 instance of the matching type, billed per hour. The price covers the Basic Amazon Linux 2 software with support on that instance. You choose the instance size, from nano up to 24xlarge or bare-metal, and pay the rate tied to it.
Hourly software charges apply only while an instance runs. When you stop an instance, the software meter pauses and no software hours accrue. Underlying AWS storage or other resources may still bill separately. To fully stop charges, terminate the instance.
Each instance type maps to its own hourly rate. Running a larger type, such as an m5.24xlarge instead of an m5.large, bills at that type's rate for the hours it runs. Costs scale with the compute size you select, not with a separate usage metric.
