You pay by the hour for the software running on your chosen Amazon EC2 instance type. Each dimension maps to one specific EC2 instance size, and the price scales with that instance's compute, memory, storage, and accelerator profile. Smaller general-purpose types like t2 and t3 sit at the low end, while large memory, storage, GPU, and bare-metal types carry higher hourly rates. You select one instance type, and billing accrues only while that instance runs. There is no upfront commitment; usage stops when you stop the instance.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does the hourly rate for each instance type actually cover?
The hourly rate covers the Base NixOS 24.05 software running on your chosen Amazon EC2 instance. It is the software charge only. The underlying EC2 compute, storage, and data transfer are billed separately by AWS. You pay one rate per running instance per hour.
Am I charged the software rate when my instance is stopped?
The software charge meters running instance-hours only. A stopped instance accrues no software fee. Note that AWS may still charge for attached storage while the instance is stopped, but the Base NixOS 24.05 software license bills only while the instance runs.
Do I pay more if I move my workload to a bigger instance type?
Yes. Each dimension maps to one EC2 instance type, and the hourly rate reflects that instance's size and profile. Switching to a larger memory, storage, GPU, or bare-metal type moves you to that type's rate. You are billed at the rate of whichever type is running.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
