Overview
This AMI runs a self-hosted, open-source dashboards and visualization platform for metrics, logs, traces and SQL data on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS: build dashboards and alerts over Prometheus, Elasticsearch, InfluxDB, Graphite, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server, Amazon CloudWatch, Jaeger, Zipkin and more, all of which are built into the application. It is the unmodified open-source edition, release 12.4.14, pinned and baked into the AMI, so first start does not depend on a registry and nothing is downloaded when it starts. Dashboards, users and settings are kept in an SQLite database on the instance.
What Perimattic adds
Administrator created for you: a fresh install of this software ships a default administrator login of admin with the password admin. That login does not exist here: there is no user called admin. During first-login setup a random 24-character password is generated on your server and the application creates a single administrator (user name dashadmin) from it on its first start. Setup then checks that the password works, that admin/admin and a wrong password are refused, that sign-up is closed, that anonymous requests are refused and that no data source exists, before the site is published.
Locked down by default: sign-up and creating organisations are off, anonymous access is off, public dashboards and publishing snapshots to an external service are off, the unauthenticated metrics endpoint is off, cookies are marked secure, and avatars are not fetched from a third party. The key that encrypts data source credentials in the database is generated per instance (the built-in default is public). Usage reporting, update checks, the news feed and start-up plugin downloads are switched off. No data source, dashboard or credential is pre-configured: you add your own.
HTTPS and live updates: Apache is configured as a reverse proxy and a free Let's Encrypt certificate is requested for your domain with certbot. The live (websocket) connection works through Apache and is accepted from your domain only; the tests prove a real handshake, and refusals for anonymous and foreign-origin connections. The application runs as an unprivileged user and listens only on the loopback interface.
Patched base: Ubuntu 24.04 LTS built through an automated EC2 Image Builder pipeline, with security updates applied at build time.
What you should know
This is the open-source edition only: paid enterprise features, enterprise data sources and white-labelling are not included, and because the application is unmodified its web interface shows its original branding. No mail server is configured, so alert emails and password-reset emails need an SMTP server that you set up. A data source can be pointed at any address you choose; only administrators can add one. In our tests the application used about 320 MB of memory (about 600 MB for the whole host), so a t3.small (2 GB) is the recommended starting size; large dashboards, many users or heavy alerting need more.
Licence and attribution
Built on the open-source Grafana (AGPL-3.0, with some components under Apache-2.0 and MIT). The image is unmodified. Not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Grafana Labs; Grafana is a trademark of its owner.
Getting Started Launch the AMI and open ports 22, 80 and 443 in the security group SSH in and answer the setup prompts (domain and admin email) Open https://your-domain/ and sign in as dashadmin with the password printed at the end of setup Add a data source, then build your first dashboard
A domain name with an A record pointing at the instance is required, because the site is served over HTTPS.

64-bit (x86) Amazon Machine Image (AMI)
Amazon Machine Image (AMI)
An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
Version release notes
Initial release.
- Application: Observability Dashboards 12.4.14 (container image pinned, baked into the AMI).
- Base: Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, fully patched at build time, built by an automated EC2 Image Builder pipeline.
- TLS: Apache reverse proxy with a Let's Encrypt certificate requested by certbot at first login.
- Credentials are generated on the instance at first login; none are present in the image.
- The administrator (user dashadmin) is created by the application on its first start with a random 24-character password generated at first login (there is no admin/admin login); sign-up and anonymous access are off, and setup verifies all of this before the site is published.
- Open-source edition release 12.4.14 (AGPL-3.0, unmodified official image) on SQLite, running as an unprivileged user on the loopback interface; websocket live connections work through Apache. See the product description for the licence and attribution notice.
- Telemetry, update checks, news feed, start-up plugin downloads, the public metrics endpoint, public dashboards and external snapshots are off; the data source encryption key is generated per instance; no data source is pre-configured; no SMTP is configured.

Usage instructions
-
Launch an Instance
From AWS Marketplace, click Continue to Subscribe and then Continue to Configuration to launch the AMI.
-
Choose the Recommended Instance Type
t3.small (2 GB of memory) is the recommended starting size: the application used about 320 MB in our tests (about 600 MB for the whole host). Choose t3.medium or larger for many users, large dashboards or heavy alerting.
-
Configure Security Group
Allow inbound traffic on the following ports:
- 22 (SSH) - terminal access for setup
- 80 (HTTP) - needed to validate your domain for the TLS certificate
- 443 (HTTPS) - access to Observability Dashboards
-
Point a domain at the instance
Create a DNS A record (for example dashboards.example.com) pointing to the instance's public IP before you log in.
-
Connect to the Instance
ssh -i <your-key.pem> ubuntu@<public-ip>
-
First-Login Setup
The first SSH login runs a guided setup:
- Prompts for your domain and admin email and checks the DNS A record
- Generates a random 24-character administrator password and a per-instance encryption key on your server
- Starts the application, which creates the administrator (user dashadmin) on its first start, then checks that the password works, that admin/admin, a wrong password and anonymous requests are refused, that sign-up is closed and that no data source exists
- Configures Apache as an HTTPS reverse proxy (with websocket support) and requests a Let's Encrypt certificate
- Prints the URL, username and password; they are also stored in /opt/app/access.txt (root only)
If a step fails, fix the problem shown and log in again: the setup resumes where it stopped.
-
Access Observability Dashboards
Open https://<your-domain>/ and sign in as the user dashadmin with the password printed at the end of setup (view it again with: sudo cat /opt/app/access.txt). Add your own data sources under Connections; none are pre-configured. You can change the password in your profile whenever you like.
-
Credentials
Generated on your server, never shared between customers. View them again with:
sudo cat /opt/app/access.txt
-
Manage the Services
cd /opt/app sudo docker compose ps sudo docker compose restart
Data (SQLite database, dashboards, users) is in /opt/app/data; back up that folder together with /opt/app/.env (it holds the encryption key for data source credentials) or snapshot the volume before upgrades. No SMTP server is configured.
