Overview
GPL Technologies deploys fully self-managed Thinkbox Deadline 10 render farms on AWS for VFX, animation, and post-production studios. Unlike managed render services, a GPL-deployed Deadline 10 farm runs entirely in your AWS account under your control -- every component configured, tuned, and extended with GPL's proprietary pipeline plugins.
This offering is the right fit for studios that need maximum control over their render infrastructure, have existing Deadline 10 workflows they want to move to the cloud, or require custom pipeline integrations that go beyond what managed services support.
WHAT WE DEPLOY
Deadline 10 Core Infrastructure: Repository server on EC2 with MongoDB backend, Deadline Web Service and REST API, Deadline Pulse for Worker monitoring and auto-scaling, Remote Connection Server for secure remote access, and license server deployment (Thinkbox licensing or client-provided RLM/Flexera).
EC2 Worker Fleets: Spot Fleet configuration with instance type diversification for cost optimization, On-Demand baseline Workers for guaranteed capacity, hardened Worker AMIs with DCC apps pre-installed, Auto Scaling via Deadline Spot Event Plugin or custom Lambda triggers, and clean interruption handling with automatic job requeue on Spot reclaim.
Storage Integration: Amazon FSx for Lustre (high-throughput render scratch), Amazon EFS (shared project storage), Amazon S3 (asset input/output with pre/post-render sync scripts), and NFS/SMB mounts from on-prem storage over VPN or Direct Connect.
CUSTOM PIPELINE INTEGRATION
GPL builds proprietary Deadline 10 plugins connecting your farm to every layer of your studio pipeline. Submitter plugins support Maya, 3ds Max, Houdini (Mantra, Karma, TOPs, distributed sims), Nuke, Katana, Cinema 4D, Blender, After Effects, and renderers including Arnold, V-Ray, Redshift, RenderMan, and OctaneRender.
Pipeline automation includes pre/post render hooks, multi-pass job templates, job dependency graphs, tile and distributed rendering, custom Event Plugins for job lifecycle management, and auto-requeue logic that distinguishes Spot interruptions from true errors.
Production tracking integrations cover ShotGrid/Autodesk Flow (auto-versioning, status updates, thumbnails), ftrack, NIM, and custom studio tool bridges with cost-per-frame reporting dashboards.
CUSTOMER DATA LIFECYCLE ENCRYPTION
GPL deploys end-to-end encryption using AWS KMS Customer Managed Keys. At rest: encrypted EBS volumes, FSx, EFS, S3 (SSE-KMS), Worker AMI root volumes, and MongoDB data directories. In transit: TLS 1.2/1.3 enforced on all connections, SSL-configured RCS, HTTPS-only S3 policies, and VPN/Direct Connect encryption. Key management includes separate keys per data classification, automated annual rotation, CloudTrail audit logging, and least-privilege IAM scoping. S3 Object Lifecycle rules automate Glacier transitions, and MFA-delete protects output buckets. TPN/MPA-aligned content security posture included.
WHO IT'S FOR
Studios with established Deadline 10 pipelines moving to AWS, facilities needing deep customization, productions with complex multi-application workflows, and organizations with TPN, MPA, or contractual content security requirements where infrastructure ownership and data auditability are essential.
Highlights
- Full control, fully on AWS. GPL deploys a complete self-managed Deadline 10 environment in your AWS account -- Repository server, Worker fleets on EC2 Spot and On-Demand instances, Deadline Web Service, and Pulse. No vendor-managed layer between you and your render infrastructure. Every queue, pool, job template, and Worker AMI is yours to configure, customize, and own.
- Deep custom pipeline integration -- not just submitters. GPL builds proprietary Deadline 10 plugins connecting your farm to every layer of your studio pipeline: DCC submitters with AOV/pass support, multi-step job dependency graphs, pre/post render hooks, ShotGrid/Flow auto-versioning, ftrack and NIM bridges, and custom event plugins for automated job lifecycle management.
- Full customer data lifecycle encryption. GPL deploys end-to-end encryption across your Deadline 10 environment using AWS KMS Customer Managed Keys -- encrypted EBS volumes, FSx, EFS, and S3 at rest; TLS 1.2/1.3 in transit; automated key rotation; CloudTrail KMS audit logs; and S3 Object Lifecycle rules for render asset retention and deletion. TPN/MPA-aligned content security posture included.
