You pay by the hour for Minimal AlmaLinux OS 8, billed for each running instance. Pricing is not a set of tiers. Instead, each rate maps to a specific AWS EC2 instance type. Options span the T2, T3, and T3a burstable families and the M3, M4, M5, M5a, M5ad, M5d, M5dn, and M5n general-purpose families. Within each family, sizes range from nano and micro up to 24xlarge and bare-metal. Your hourly cost scales with the size and family you select. You start and stop instances as needed, paying only for hours used.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What am I actually paying for with each hourly rate?
You pay a software license fee for Minimal AlmaLinux OS 8 running on a chosen AWS EC2 instance type. The rate is tied to one running instance of that type. The AWS compute cost for the instance is billed separately by AWS.
Am I charged when my instance is stopped or powered off?
The software license meters running hours only. A stopped or powered-off instance does not accrue software charges. Underlying AWS storage fees for attached volumes may still apply while the instance is stopped, since those are billed by AWS separately.
How do I connect to the virtual machine after purchase?
You find the instance IP address in your Amazon account. You generate a private key in advance, then connect over SSH using a client. Log in with the user name ec2-user. You can check machine details with commands like hostnamectl and uname -r.
