You pay by the hour for a hardened Ubuntu 18.04 machine image running on AWS EC2. The software price is the same regardless of instance type. Each dimension maps to one EC2 instance size, so your hourly rate follows the compute, memory, and storage capacity you choose. Small burstable options (like t3 and t2 families) cover light workloads. General-purpose (m-family), compute-optimized (c-family), memory-optimized (r and x families), storage, and accelerated instances scale up for heavier needs. You pick the instance that fits your workload, and billing tracks actual running hours plus standard AWS infrastructure charges.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
Each hourly unit covers one running EC2 instance of the size you pick, running the pre-updated hardened Ubuntu 18.04 image. The software fee is the same across all instance types. Your rate follows the compute, memory, and storage of the chosen instance, billed per hour of running time.
The software fee meters running hours only. A fully stopped instance does not accrue the hourly software charge. Standard AWS infrastructure fees, such as storage for the attached volume, may still apply while the instance is stopped. Charges resume when you start the instance again.
Switching instance size changes only the AWS compute rate tied to that size. The hardened Ubuntu 18.04 software fee stays the same across every instance type. You choose the instance that fits your workload, and billing tracks the running hours of whichever size is active.
