What does one billed unit represent for this hardened RHEL 10 server?
Each unit is one running EC2 instance of the type you select. You are billed per instance-hour. If you run three instances, you pay three hourly software charges. The rate matches the instance type, so larger compute sizes carry higher hourly charges. Each running instance meters separately.
Am I charged the hourly software fee when an instance is stopped?
The software charge meters running instance-hours only. A fully stopped instance does not accrue the hourly software fee. Underlying AWS storage costs for the attached volumes may still apply while the instance is stopped. Charges resume when you start the instance again.
What compliance hardening is included regardless of which instance type I pick?
Every instance ships pre-hardened for regulated workloads, built to meet PCI DSS, HIPAA, NIST, and STIG benchmarks. The hardening does not change with instance type. Your choice of instance affects only compute size and the hourly rate, not the security configuration included with the image.

Allow inbound SSH access in your security group (TCP port 22)
To connect to your instance using the Amazon EC2 console:
Open the Amazon EC2 console at https://console.aws.amazon.com/ec2/.
In the navigation pane, choose Instances.
Select the instance and choose Connect.
Choose the EC2 Instance Connect tab.
For Connection type, choose Connect using EC2 Instance Connect.
Access the ec2 with the default username: ec2-user
