Overview
This is a repackaged open-source software product wherein additional charges apply for support. CDNs are widely used by websites, streaming platforms, e-commerce stores, and SaaS applications. Popular CDN providers include Cloudflare, AWS CloudFront, Fastly, and Akamai, while self-hosted solutions like Nginx reverse proxy or Apache Traffic Server allow organizations to build their own CDN infrastructure for full control over caching rules, cache-control headers, and content exclusions such as API or authentication routes. When a user requests a resource, the CDN automatically routes the request to the nearest Point of Presence (PoP), which either serves the cached content instantly or fetches it from the origin server, caches it, and then delivers it.
Highlights
- Operated by third-party providers and shared across many customers.
- Extends CDN capabilities by running application logic (serverless functions) at edge nodes, closer to the user.
- Focused on protecting web applications from DDoS attacks, bots, and malicious traffic while also delivering content.
