A ready OpenTelemetry Collector gateway for traces, metrics and logs. otelcol 0.162.0 on Ubuntu 24.04 receives OTLP over TLS, writes to a local file and is built to take your own exporters. Includes a walkthrough that sends a test span.

    Overview

Stand up an OpenTelemetry Collector gateway in minutes. This image runs otelcol 0.162.0 with OTLP receivers over HTTPS and gRPC with TLS, pipelines for traces, metrics and logs, and a rotating local JSON file destination, ready for you to add the exporter for your backend.

Launch this version on t3.medium with at least 16 GiB encrypted root storage and at least 4 GiB RAM. Connect with AWS Systems Manager Session Manager. You land as ssm-user; run sudo -iu ubuntu to switch to the ubuntu account. SSH is off: no key pair is attached and no inbound rule is needed. First boot writes this instance's TLS material and config; nothing sensitive is baked into the image. otelcol listens on loopback only: OTLP HTTP 127.0.0.1:4318, OTLP gRPC 127.0.0.1:4317, health 127.0.0.1:13133, and internal metrics 127.0.0.1:8888. The default destination is a rotating local JSON file. Contrib AWS exporters are not included. Keep credentials out of recordings and tickets.

The standard software fee is described in the AWS Marketplace offer terms. EC2, EBS and data-transfer charges are billed separately. See the offer terms for applicable billing promotions.

After launch, wait for cloud-init to finish, then follow the bundled README for configuration, backup and day-2 operations. IAM is optional until you add an exporter that calls AWS.

Reach it from other machines: The receivers listen on loopback and do not authenticate clients. Before accepting remote producers, plan client authentication, for example through a proxy you control, and allow only your own network in the security group.

This is a repackaged open source software product wherein additional charges apply for independent AWS packaging, validation, maintenance and setup documentation. The OpenTelemetry Authors publish the Collector under Apache-2.0; Software Sushi supplies the AMI recipe, pinned official otelcol 0.162.0 linux/amd64 tarball, first-boot TLS, loopback defaults, and setup documentation without claiming upstream endorsement.

    Highlights

    • Pinned otelcol 0.162.0 official linux/amd64 build with provenance receipts.
    • Loopback OTLP gateway with first-boot TLS and a local JSON file destination.
    • Bundled configuration, backup and day-2 operations documentation.

     Info

    Dimensions summary

You pay a single usage-based rate billed per running instance-hour on a t3.medium EC2 instance. There is one pricing dimension, so cost scales only with how long you keep the instance running. When you stop the instance, the software charge stops. AWS bills EC2, EBS, and data transfer separately from this software charge. No commitment or upfront fee applies.

    Top-of-mind questions for buyers

You run the official otelcol 0.162.0 core build on a t3.medium EC2 instance. It provides an OTLP gateway for traces, metrics, and logs over HTTPS and gRPC with TLS, plus a local JSON file exporter. First boot creates the TLS certificate and configuration.
The software charge meters running instance-hours only, so stopping the instance stops the software charge. AWS still bills EC2, EBS storage, and data transfer separately. Those AWS infrastructure costs are not part of the per-hour software price.
No. This is the core Collector, not the contrib distribution. Cloud-specific exporters, the SigV4 authentication extension, and the redaction processor are not included. The offer also does not include OpenTelemetry project support. You add your own configuration and credentials after launch.

    Amazon Machine Image (AMI)

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.

    Version release notes

OpenTelemetry Collector v0.162.0 on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, packaged by Software Sushi. The documented demo command now works from the ubuntu home directory. The documentation under /opt/sushi/docs is root-owned and a first-login guide appears after sudo -iu ubuntu. Connect with Session Manager, run sudo -iu ubuntu, then bash /opt/sushi/docs/demo.sh. Configure your own provider keys and models privately after launch.

    Additional details

    Usage instructions

    1. Launch t3.medium (16 GiB or larger encrypted gp3, IMDSv2) with an instance profile that has AmazonSSMManagedInstanceCore and outbound HTTPS. No inbound rules are needed. Copy-paste launch kit (role, security group, run-instances, CloudFormation): https://docs.softwaresushi.com/launch-kit/
    2. Connect: aws ssm start-session --target <instance-id>. You land as ssm-user; sudo -iu ubuntu switches to the ubuntu account and shows the first-login guide. After cloud-init finishes, run: sudo -iu ubuntu bash /opt/sushi/docs/demo.sh (expect a final line ending in DEMO_PASSED).
    3. Use it: Send OTLP over HTTPS to port 4318 (/v1/traces, /v1/metrics, /v1/logs), trusting /usr/local/share/sushi/otelcol/cert.pem. Telemetry is written to /var/lib/otelcol/out/telemetry.json. Health check on port 13133.
    4. Secrets and access: No password is generated: the receivers use TLS but do not authenticate clients, so keep them private. To send from your computer, forward port 4318: aws ssm start-session --target <instance-id> --document-name AWS-StartPortForwardingSession --parameters '{"portNumber":["4318"],"localPortNumber":["4318"]}'
    5. Reach it from another host: the receivers listen on loopback and do not authenticate clients. Before accepting remote producers, plan client authentication (for example a proxy you control) and allow only your own network in the security group. Do not bind to 0.0.0.0 or expose it to the internet. Guide: https://docs.softwaresushi.com/otel-collector/  . Support: info@softwaresushi.com
