What do you like best about the product?
What I like most about Spotify Portal for Backstage is the combination of product quality, flexibility, and the real business impact it can deliver.
The level of customisation is particularly impressive. The Plugin Studio is truly outstanding — I’ve never experienced such a developer-friendly way of working locally with production data. It makes experimenting, developing, and iterating incredibly easy, and the experience becomes even more powerful when combined with AI agents.
Another thing that really stands out is the team behind the product. They are always approachable and happy to help, and the initial kickoff and onboarding experience were genuinely first-class.
Overall, it’s not just the technology itself, but the combination of a high-quality product, an excellent developer experience, and a team that makes you feel supported throughout the journey.

What do you dislike about the product?
One area I think could be improved is the integration with repositories. It would be great to have a more seamless, native way of working with repositories, particularly around using AI agents to scan and understand repository definitions.
There has been good progress in this direction, but I still feel that, today, relying on catalog metadata files can sometimes be more practical and predictable. A more automated and intelligent approach to discovering and maintaining this information directly from repositories would make the overall experience even better.

What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Spotify Portal for Backstage helps us establish a single source of truth for teams, projects, ownership, and the overall software landscape, while presenting that information in a clear and accessible way.
We are also currently exploring how to use Soundcheck as a source of truth for quality and engineering standards across different aspects of our software ecosystem. This is particularly valuable because it can give us a consistent and measurable view of quality and compliance.
I see this as an important enabler for our AI transformation. Having reliable ownership, context, and quality information in one place creates the foundation that AI agents need to understand our systems, make better decisions, and eventually automate more of our development and operational processes.
