What I like most about VAST Data is how technically ambitious the company is. It isn’t just addressing a traditional storage problem; it’s rethinking how data infrastructure should work in an AI-driven world, and that bigger-picture approach really comes through.

One thing I find challenging about VAST Data is that its technology and overall product architecture are fairly complex, which can make it harder to fully understand at first.

What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?

VAST Data is addressing some of the core infrastructure challenges that come with AI and large-scale data. For me, the biggest benefit is the chance to work on technically demanding problems at scale, which makes the work both engaging and meaningful.

What I like best is how VAST Data consolidates multi-tier storage into a single, unified namespace.

The platform relies heavily on an ultra-low-latency RDMA network fabric to avoid processing bottlenecks.

What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?

VAST Data solves the problem of complex multi-tiered storage silos by consolidating all our structured and unstructured data into one high-performance namespace. This directly benefits us by eliminating the manual overhead of moving data between tiers, radically simplifying our operations while giving us the speed of all-flash storage at an affordable scale.

What do you like best about the product?

What I appreciate most about Vast data is that it simply eliminates waiting around for data. Previously, if someone needed older data, there was always a delay. With Vast, everything is on fast storage. So accessing a file from a year ago feels just as instantaneous as pulling up something created an hour ago. Another huge benefit is how smoothly it handles different tools. Some of our applications are like a normal network folder while others expect modern cloud-based data access. With Vast, both sides can tap into the exact same data set without having to make duplicate copies or run conversion jobs. It keeps our daily workflow clean and removes a lot of usual data transfer shortcomings.

What do you dislike about the product?

The biggest limitation with VAST is that it’s really built for large-scale operations. If your data footprint isn’t that big, the platform often doesn’t make financial or practical sense. The initial entry point also requires a significant physical footprint, which can rule it out for smaller branch offices, small pilot projects, or teams that only need tens of terabytes. Another consideration is how demanding it can be on your network infrastructure. Because the hardware relies on high-bandwidth switches to deliver those top-tier speeds, your network environment has to be in good shape. Even a small configuration oversight in your network fabric can quickly bottleneck the system. It isn’t a simple “plug it into an existing rack and forget it” box.

What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?

Before bringing in VAST, our biggest headache was the friction between active storage and archive storage. When projects wrapped up or data sets grew too large, we had to move files onto slower, cheaper storage to save money. But whenever teams needed to rerun historical numbers or revisit older data sets, people were stuck waiting hours—or even days—for data to be revived. That created constant delays across projects and ate up valuable time just moving files around. VAST solves this by letting us keep everything on a single, fast system. Because all our data stays readily accessible at full speed, nobody has to wonder where an old file went or put in a request for an archive restore. Project turnaround times are noticeably faster, and our team can spend working hours actually analyzing data and delivering results, rather than wrestling with transfers and copying data back and forth.

What do you like best about the product?

I like that the implementation and ongoing administration of Vast Data are notably straightforward, with no hidden agendas. It eliminates the need to manage various use cases, which is particularly useful for us. Vast Data also combines strong scalability with a favorable cost-to-value ratio. Although our procurement team has some budget considerations, I find the combination appealing. Additionally, its performance across intensive workloads is fairly decent, ensuring reliable access as data scales. It simplifies our work by unifying files, structured tables, and vector embeddings on a single platform, reducing dependencies on complex ETL pipelines. This streamlined approach makes managing large datasets much easier. The platform delivers high and scalable data access, which accelerates model training and retrieval speeds. I also appreciate that Vast Data seems optimized for heavy read workloads and that it performs better than other tools we tested.

What do you dislike about the product?

The main issue I have with Vast Data is the cost; while it's favorable for me, the team, especially the procurement team, feels it's a bit on the high side. Also, the implementation wasn't as straightforward as expected. We managed to figure it out, but more documentation or pointers would have made the process smoother and saved time. The solution also requires a substantial hardware footprint, which might not be suitable for smaller players. Additionally, it seems to be better optimized for heavy read workloads over heavy random transactional operations, which could limit its use for some specific cases.

I use Vast Data to address storage challenges, manage data accessibility, and reduce operational complexity. It unifies files on a single platform, streamlining dataset management and ensuring reliable access as data scales. It combines scalability with a decent cost, eliminating the need for separate storage systems.

What do you like best about the product?

I really like Vast Data's unified platform that brings together files, objects, tables, and streams into a single namespace, which saves time and reduces complexity. The AI-native design built with GPUs and AI pipelines in mind is another standout feature, making it feel future-proof. I also appreciate the combination of speed and simplicity that Vast Data offers, which makes management easier for IT teams and data scientists alike. Lastly, the initial setup was easier than legacy systems because of Vast Data's containerized, unified design. Even though the main challenges are more about adoption and integration than the installation itself, it provides consistent speed even at an exabyte scale, which is relatively rare.

What do you dislike about the product?

The high upfront costs of Vast Data's all-flash architecture are a bit of a downside. While it's powerful, it can be expensive and tricky for smaller organizations or those with more modest workloads to justify. Even though deduplication and compression help over the long term, the initial barrier is pretty steep. This doesn't mean it's not valuable, but it's definitely better suited for organizations with large-scale, performance-hungry workloads. For smaller IT environments or companies that prioritize cost over cutting-edge performance, other options might make more sense. There's also the learning curve for teams switching from legacy systems, which takes time to navigate, and the ecosystem maturity compared to older players is still something Vast is working on, with integration and community resources still growing.

What do you like best about the product?

I like how Vast Data makes managing and working with large data amounts feel more streamlined and scalable. It's really helpful for data-heavy workloads where performance and quick access are crucial. What stands out for me is how responsive it is with demanding workloads, even with a lot of data. I don't have to wait around or worry about performance issues. I appreciate Vast Data's unified storage approach, fast data access, and scalability. The centralized platform simplifies my work because it saves me from handling separate storage environments for different workloads. Plus, the initial setup was pretty simple.

What do you dislike about the product?

The main area for me personally is always the learning curve. Vast Data has a lot going on under the hood, and some of the terminology and configuration options can feel quite technical when you're first getting familiar with the platform. The complexity was most noticeable for me when first understanding how the different parts of the platform fit together, especially around configuration storage, managing data access, and knowing which settings are the best for different workloads.

I love how easy Vast Data is to use and how quickly I can get storage up and running with it. The wizards are effective at setting up storage pools quickly. I also like the reports it provides on what is happening with the storage. Overall, everything works really well for me.

I also like its focus on modern AI and data-intensive environments, where performance and efficient data management are increasingly important.

More simplified documentation, practical examples, and step-by-step guidance could make onboarding and day-to-day management easier.

What I like most is that they have managed to offer great security in storage and, in addition, wonderful support. I also highlight that its performance is exceptional.
