Infogix Uses Clumio on AWS to Automate Backups and Reduce Storage Costs

Striving to Save Time and Money
Infogix is a global data governance and management software company that integrates advanced automation into data governance, data analytics, and intelligent data quality to provide customers with business-ready data. The company’s data management tools include Data360, a software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform for data governance, data quality, and data analytics that runs on the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Cloud. Data360 automates and streamlines data quality, tracks data lineage, and simplifies data preparation, giving users faster time-to-insight and data they can trust.
For many years, Infogix had performed data backups for Data360 using an on-premises solution. Increasingly, this aging solution caused challenges for the company. “Like many organizations, our IT team supports the entire organization, but with a complex backup infrastructure, we spent too much time managing,” says Marcus Johnston, Chief Information Security Officer for Infogix. “We had to select and implement software and hardware for each VMware vSphere workload and plan storage capacity carefully. This was a drain on our IT resources and was becoming too cumbersome.” In addition, the organization’s backup costs were too high. “There’s a significant cost associated with copying data and replicating it to other regions in the cloud,” Johnston says. “We realized these costs were only going to grow as we continued focusing on our cloud strategy.”
Using Clumio for Data Backup and Protection on AWS
Infogix addressed its challenges by turning to Clumio, a provider of a cloud-based data backup and protection service. Clumio, an AWS Partner Network (APN) Advanced Technology Partner and AWS Storage Competency Partner, offers a backup-as-a-service solution that writes deduplicated, compressed, and encrypted data directly to Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) for data storage. Clumio also relies on AWS Lambda, Amazon Elastic Container Service (Amazon ECS), and Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) for compute capacity to perform post-processing tasks including global file indexing. “Clumio is a forward-thinking company that is responsive to its customers’ needs and offers the features we were looking for,” says Johnston. “We also have a long history using AWS services, and the fact that Clumio is built on AWS was another factor in our decision.”
Using Clumio, Infogix takes advantage of a central management console, accessed through a URL, to back up and recover vSphere workloads on AWS. Infogix uses Clumio to back up close to a petabyte of Data360 data onto AWS and protect it. “Infogix relies on Clumio to manage data across multiple AWS accounts, with the same set of core policies in place,” says Steve Siegel, Head of Product Marketing for Clumio. “Our solution is designed to reduce the burden of backups and lower overall costs, while providing simplicity and scalability.”
Automating Backups for Data360
Infogix has simplified data backup and recovery by implementing Clumio to back up vSphere workloads on AWS. As a result, Infogix has eliminated its on-premises server and storage footprint and reduced operational workloads by 75 percent. “Clumio provides a centralized, easy-to-use solution that eases our data backup processes and removes the complexity of our on-premises technology,” says Johnston. “Clumio gives us the reassurance that our Data360 data is automatically backed up, without us needing to set multiple policies. Our IT team is always looking to do more with less, and Clumio helps us do that.”

Cutting Costs by 10%, Giving Developers More Time for New Applications
By using Clumio to back up its Data360 environments to AWS, Infogix has reduced some of the costs associated with backing up and replicating data. “So far, we have saved at least 10 percent of our data backup and storage costs by retiring our on-premises backup solution, and we expect that number to grow as we move backup workloads from other applications to Clumio,” Johnston says. “We plan to put these cost savings back into creating toolsets for our developers, so they can more easily perform QA and development tasks and create new applications and features for Data360 that benefit our customers.”
Infogix has also improved its compliance capabilities, because it can reliably store more data. “From a data governance and security perspective, our customers have a single place to go to prove that data controls are repeatable and scalable,” Siegel says. Adds Johnston, “Using Clumio, we can easily and quickly restore data from either six weeks ago or six months ago for compliance purposes, and we expect to spend 75 percent less time preparing for audits on our workloads.” Going forward, Infogix plans to expand its use of Clumio to back up additional workloads. “We are excited to partner with a company that will grow with us and can anticipate where our industry is going and what our future needs will be,” says Johnston.
Now in its fourth decade, Infogix continues to provide large and mid-market companies around the globe with a broad range of integrated and configurable tools to govern, manage, and use data. From operations to sales, from product and customer service to marketing, users across the entire organization can use Infogix software to remove barriers to data access, accelerate time-to-insight, and increase operational efficiency.
Clumio provides authentic SaaS for enterprise backups. Using this secure service, organizations can eliminate hardware and software for on-premises backup and avoid the complexity and cost of running third-party backup software in the cloud. As enterprises move to the cloud, they can use Clumio to protect workloads such as VMware Cloud on AWS and AWS-native services. Born in the public cloud, Clumio leverages modern cloud services to ensure it meets the current and future backup requirements of the most demanding enterprises.
