Megaxus Supports 500,000 App Downloads with AWS

Megaxus

An Indonesian Online Gaming Leader

PT Megaxus Infotech (Megaxus) is a leading games publisher in Indonesia. Launched in 2006, the company is responsible for some of the country’s most popular online games, such as Counter-Strike Online, a well-known first-person shooter (FPS) game, and AyoDance Mobile, a dance battle game.

Setting Its Sights on Mobile Gaming

Historically, Megaxus ran an on-premises infrastructure to support its online games. Then, in 2017, the company began looking at cloud-based IT. Felix Darmoko, brand manager at Megaxus, explains, “We were launching an online mobile game and needed a highly scalable IT solution that we could quickly ramp up if the number of downloads took off.”

“With Amazon EC2, we had no trouble adding capacity to our web servers even with the number of app downloads climbing to 500,000 within the first two months of launch.”

Leveraging the Cloud for Success

Megaxus built the infrastructure for its app-based game, AyoDance Mobile, on the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Cloud. Darmoko says, “When we compared cloud service providers, we found AWS to be the most flexible, easy to use, and comprehensive, in terms of the number of services available.”

The Megaxus IT team built the AWS infrastructure internally, configuring Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) instances as the game’s web servers. The team also incorporated Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) for housing static imagery, and Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS) to store player data.

Quickly Scaling for 500,000 Downloads

Thanks to the scalability of AWS, Megaxus achieved a rapid increase in the number of downloads for the app when the game went live. “With Amazon EC2, we had no trouble adding capacity to our web servers even with the number of app downloads climbing to 500,000 within the first two months of launch,” says Darmoko.

Reducing Web Server Costs by 60%

With downloads reaching 1 million for AyoDance Mobile by October 2018, Megaxus adopted AWS Auto Scaling. Darmoko says, “Through Auto Scaling, we automated our Amazon EC2 scaling and optimization processes—reducing our Amazon EC2 costs by 60 percent.”
