Customers can now use AWS Storage Gateway to migrate, store and access data in the AWS GovCloud (US) Region from on-premises or AWS GovCloud (US) environments. Storage Gateway connects applications to AWS storage, enabling hybrid cloud architectures used for data migration, processing and analytics, file services, backup, and disaster recovery. With Storage Gateway, you can shift from buying storage or backup hardware to using AWS storage services, reducing physical infrastructure and management.

The Storage Gateway service offers three types of gateways. File Gateway enables you to store files as objects in Amazon S3, and access them through standard file protocols or the S3 API. Volume Gateway presents block volumes that are automatically stored on AWS, as EBS Snapshots or as online tiered volumes. Tape Gateway acts as a Virtual Tape Library (VTL) that backup applications can use to store data on Amazon Glacier and S3. All gateway types secure and optimize data transfer to AWS, and integrate natively with other AWS services such as Amazon CloudWatch.

To use the service, you deploy a software appliance on vSphere, Hyper-V or Amazon EC2, and connect it to applications with file (NFS), block (iSCSI) and tape (iSCSI-VTL) protocols. The appliances include a local cache for low-latency data access.

In addition to the AWS GovCloud (US) Region, Storage Gateway is available in 16 other regions worldwide. Learn more on our AWS Storage Gateway details and Pricing pages.
