Building connections and community: AWS employees share their volunteering experiences

More than 115,000 Amazon employees across 51 countries volunteered in over 4,000 events throughout the communities where we work and live.

Amazon employees got together for the third annual ENABLE Summit, which stands for Empowering Network of Amazon Black Executives. About 50 men and women posed together outdoors for the photo.

Amazon launched its Global Month of Volunteering to build stronger communities in the cities and towns where our employees live and work. In 2023, more than 70,000 Amazon and AWS employees in over 50 countries led about 1,800 volunteer events for causes they’re passionate about. In 2024, more than 115,000 employees across 51 countries volunteered in over
4,000 events throughout the communities where we work and live.

This May marked the third Global Month of Volunteering, where a growing number of Amazonians gave back to their communities and expressed pride in putting Amazon's Success and Scale Bring Broad Responsibility Leadership Principle into action.

We asked AWS employees about the personal impacts of their volunteering experiences, and what advice they have for colleagues and other professionals looking to make an impact within their communities.

It is a pleasure for us to take part in contributing to the community. Through painting and other aesthetic upgrades for a local school, we can help improve the environment for children and contribute to better focus at school. We had a great experience in transforming a local school at Narayanapura, Bengaluru. The Global Month of Volunteering and Give Hub has given us an opportunity to experience personal happiness from giving back and joining with fellow Amazonians to contribute to the community."

"Volunteering has a profound impact on me personally; it grounds me in gratitude, enriches my life with purpose, and connects me to the broader human experience. It's a reminder of the struggles others face and how stepping up can make a significant difference. It has been incredibly fulfilling experience for me. It makes me really value our company's commitment to giving back—it's not just about work; it's also about making a real difference. It makes me proud to be part of our team."

“Working for a company that values corporate social responsibility is deeply meaningful to me. It signifies a commitment to ethical practices and a genuine interest in making a positive impact beyond profit margins. Such a company aligns with my values, reinforcing my dedication to creating sustainable and inclusive growth. In essence, volunteering is not just a corporate strategy but a reflection of the company’s soul, and being part of such an organization is both inspiring and motivating.”

"On a personal level, the ability to give evokes a great feeling. The fact that Amazon not only allows us to volunteer on company time, but even helps and pushes us to contribute, I think it strengthens our connection with the company and its values, and makes us prouder employees."

"This type of work has been a part of my foundation from the time I was a youth into my current lifestyle. I’m glad that Amazon is holding their employees to a higher expectation to pay-it-forward for others that may need additional support. I hope that by highlighting this Global Month of Volunteering, we encourage employees to continue to give back throughout the year."

Jovonia Thibert, director, grocery automation

"Personally, I'm always refreshed and reinvigorated after a volunteer session. I'm very grateful that Amazon sees sustainability and corporate responsibility seriously enough to bake it into our Leadership Principles, and to request Amazonians get out there and actively practice service to their communities and the broader world."

"I have organized and participated many volunteering efforts at Amazon for causes like food security, education, pet shelters, and healthcare. I have been a community impact ambassador for more than 10 years, even before I joined AWS. By joining my Amazon colleagues around the world for volunteering events, I find that I am able to make a much bigger impact."

Archie Yarlagadda, principal partner specialist, AWS Partner Organization

"Personally, volunteering has been incredibly rewarding. It's humbling to witness firsthand the difference we can make in people's lives through simple acts of kindness. Working for a company that values corporate social responsibility means that I'm part of a larger movement dedicated to making a positive impact on the world. It's a source of pride and motivation, knowing that my efforts align with a company that prioritizes giving back to communities."

"I was very proud to hear from the volunteering point of contact that Amazon does not just pay for the volunteering activity, but they also send employees to support the program. I could see us putting our Success and Scale Bring Broad Responsibility Leadership Principle into practice, which was a proud moment as an Amazonian. It was also fun to be outside and burn a few calories with a happy face!"

Prashanth Padikkaveettil Prabhakaran, engineering manager, AWS Support

"Personally, I found the volunteering activity immensely satisfying. The ability to make a positive impact on young minds was gratifying, and I felt pride in experiencing Amazon's values around corporate social responsibility in action. We hosted local middle school students and held a business competition that was aimed at addressing social causes. I think I can speak for all the volunteers when I say that we were amazed and impressed with the ideas the students came up with and how they went about solving for them. Students and volunteers were all super engaged and I think we all learned a lot from this event."

"As a physician and a leader on the Global Healthcare and Nonprofit team, giving back is just part of my DNA. I’m thankful to work for a company that shares my values. Having the opportunity to partner with a community nonprofit organization allowed me to connect to purpose and align with one of our newest Leadership Principles, Success and Scale Bring Broad Responsibility."

Angela Shippy, senior physician executive

"This year, I was chosen to be a Give Back Champion/Ambassador, which involves engaging employees in volunteering activities and participating in initiatives for AWS. My aim is to give back as much as I can to contribute to the well-being of our world and environment, and inspire others to become passionate about giving back.So far, volunteering highly positively impacted me. I have met more people in the workplace and expanded my network beyond my daily responsibilities and routine. Volunteering has allowed me to highlight other opportunities not directly related to my role, bringing me motivation and helping me grow."

"Approach community engagement with a long-term, sustainable mindset. Build strong, ongoing relationships with local organizations and community leaders, leverage your unique skills and resources to create impactful solutions that serve your community, and inspire others by sharing your experiences to amplify the impact of volunteering efforts."

Daryl Hammett, general manager, global demand artificial intelligence and machine learning operations

"It is good to start with small steps. Making an impact takes time. For example, the activity I was involved in was creating a stepping stone forest. We did the groundwork, and more work will continue to take place until it becomes a Miyawaki forest. Any small volunteering activity can grow into a big effort when we work as a team."

Prashanth Padikkaveettil Prabhakaran, engineering manager, AWS Support

"The ability to give to the community exists year-round and there are many opportunities. For example, on the technical level, there are many technological communities that you can connect to in order to share knowledge with them, or mentor employees or students at the beginning of their career journey. We have the privilege of working in a company that prioritizes giving to the community."

Itai Binyamin, senior database specialist

"Small actions can lead to significant changes over time. Use your professional and personal networks to find volunteering opportunities, and share your volunteering experiences with your colleagues to inspire others. Volunteering requires a willingness to step outside your comfort zone and explore different avenues where you can make a difference. By promoting a culture of giving back, you contribute to a more compassionate and connected community."

Olga Mellor, AWS Trust & Safety operations manager

"Just follow a passion you already have; there's likely a way to give back. I love to explore my community and learn about my neighbors, which evolved into volunteer gigs beautifying our neighborhood, planting flowers and trees, and picking up trash around the city."

Mike Tarselli, specialist leader, AWS healthcare and life sciences

"If you're looking to help out, start with what you're passionate about and connect with organizations that need help. Organizing team volunteering events can make a big difference, not just in the community, but also in strengthening your team. Engaging in community service is a rewarding venture, and with a thoughtful approach, anyone can make a substantial impact!"

"Amazon makes it easy to get engaged and make a difference for social causes like disaster relief, food banks, health, environment, pets, education, and variety of others. It is easy to pick a cause on GiveHub that we find meaningful for our lives or nominate our favorite cause to make a community impact!"

"The Global Month of Volunteering provides us an opportunity to make an impact for our communities, which helps satisfy the soul. Beyond this month, anyone can contribute to society by supporting causes that are meaningful to you. It can help create an ongoing sense of purpose in your life."

"As leaders, we need to continue stretching ourselves and our teams to start with empathy to connect us beyond initial customer needs. When we think bigger for our communities, we will create new customers for life.”

Jovonia Thibert, director, grocery automation

"Take the time to learn about potential volunteer opportunities and carve out time to join an activity. When you give to others, it opens your heart and mind to recharge!"

"Find activities and causes that resonate with your social mission and dive in with them. Do not wait for others to pull you into the activities. Go to GiveHub and find your activities!"

"My advice to other builders looking to create impact within their communities is to start small, but start now. Look for opportunities where your expertise can make a meaningful difference, and don't underestimate the power of collective action. Together, we can create lasting change and build stronger, more resilient communities for everyone."
