Dimensions summary
You pay by the hour based on the EC2 instance type you choose to run the backup appliance. Each dimension maps to a specific AWS instance size, from small general-purpose types like t2.micro and t3.small to memory-, storage-, and compute-focused families such as r5, m5, i3, x1e, and z1d, up to bare-metal options like r5.metal. Pricing scales with the size and capability of the instance. You select the instance that fits your workload, and hourly charges accrue only while it runs.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
Each hourly unit maps to one running EC2 instance of the type you select. The instance runs the backup appliance software. You attach a system disk plus a second disk used as cache for object storage. The instance type sets available memory, storage, and compute for your backup workload.
Software charges accrue per hour only while the instance runs. When you stop the instance, hourly software charges stop. Underlying AWS storage fees for attached disks and object storage may still apply, since those resources persist while the instance is stopped.
Pricing scales with the instance type you run. To add memory, storage, or compute, you switch to a different instance type from the list. Each type carries its own hourly rate. You are billed at the rate for whichever instance is active during each hour.

Usage instructions
Attach a second volume to the appliance (>128GB) during setup. Access the appliance via a browser at http://<public_dns>/ and follow the instructions. To connect to the operating system, use SSH and the username admin. Backups are at /media/backup/backups .
