See AWS Free Tier for more details. See Legacy AWS Free Tier for more details.
You pay by the hour based on the EC2 instance size you run. Pricing scales with compute capacity, not features. The t2 instances (t2.nano, t2.micro, t2.small, t2.medium, t2.large, t2.xlarge, t2.2xlarge) offer burstable general-purpose capacity. The m3 instances (m3.medium, m3.large, m3.xlarge, m3.2xlarge) and m4 instances (m4.large, m4.xlarge, m4.2xlarge, m4.4xlarge, m4.10xlarge, m4.16xlarge) provide fixed general-purpose capacity in larger sizes. Larger instances carry higher hourly rates. You choose the size that matches your workload and pay only for hours used.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What software is included when I run one of these instances?
You get a bundled LAMP stack, meaning a web server, database, and runtime packaged together to run the applications. The package is self-contained and includes DDoS protection. The vendor tracks new releases and updates the bundled apps when security issues are found.
Am I charged when my instance is stopped or paused?
Hourly software charges apply only while the instance runs. A stopped instance stops accruing software charges. Underlying AWS storage fees for the stopped instance may still apply, but the software meters running hours only. You pay for the hours the instance is actually on.
What is the difference between the t2 and m-series instances for my bill?
t2 instances are burstable, so they run at a baseline and use credits for short bursts. This suits variable or light workloads. The m3 and m4 instances provide steady, fixed capacity for continuous workloads. Each type still bills per hour based on the size you pick.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
