Dimensions summary
You pay by the hour based on the AWS EC2 instance type you run. Each dimension maps to a specific instance size, so pricing scales with the compute, memory, and specialized hardware you choose. Smaller general-purpose instances (such as t2 and t3 families) sit at one end. Memory-optimized (r series), compute-optimized (c series), storage-optimized (i and d series), and GPU or accelerator instances (p, g, f, inf series) offer more capacity per hour. Software runs the same across all instances; you select the instance that fits your workload. Hourly billing means you pay only for the hours used.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
One unit is one hour that a single EC2 instance runs the software. Each dimension maps to one instance type, defining its vCPU, memory, and any GPU or accelerator hardware. You are billed for each hour that chosen instance stays running.
Software charges accrue only while the instance runs. Stopping the instance halts hourly software charges. Underlying AWS resources, such as storage attached to a stopped instance, may still incur separate AWS fees. The software meters running hours only.
The software stays the same across all instance types. It runs Visual Studio Code in your browser with AI code suggestions and plugins. Larger instances add vCPU, memory, or accelerator hardware for heavier workloads. Your hourly cost changes with the instance chosen, not the features.
