You pay by the hour for the compute capacity you run, following a pay-as-you-go model. Pricing is organized by EC2 instance type, so each dimension names a specific instance size. These range from small burstable instances to memory-optimized, compute-optimized, storage-optimized, and GPU-based instances. Larger instances carry more CPU, memory, or specialized hardware, so their hourly rate rises with capacity. You pick one instance type that matches your workload and expected file volume. You can switch instance types later by stopping and restarting the instance in your AWS account.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What resources run under each hourly instance charge?
Each hourly rate covers one running EC2 instance of the size you pick. The application also uses an S3 bucket, two storage volumes for the operating system and database files, and a load balancer. You are billed for the instance-hours the chosen instance type runs in your AWS account.
Am I charged when I stop the instance to change its type?
Software charges meter running instance-hours. To change instance type, you stop the instance, change the type, and restart it. A stopped instance stops accruing hourly software charges, though underlying AWS storage fees for your volumes may still apply while it is stopped.
Does my hourly rate change if I store more files or add users?
No. Your hourly rate is set by the instance type you run, not by file volume or user count. The system supports single files up to 5 TB. To handle heavier workloads, you switch to an instance type with more CPU, memory, or specialized hardware, which carries its own hourly rate.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
