See AWS Free Tier for more details. See Legacy AWS Free Tier for more details.
You pay by the hour for the EC2 instance size you run this software on. Each dimension maps to a specific AWS instance type, so pricing scales with the compute power you choose. The general-purpose t2, t3, and t3a families cover small workloads through larger ones, with sizes from nano up to 2xlarge. The c1, c3, and c4 families target compute-heavy tasks. The m5n family suits larger memory and network needs, up to 8xlarge. You pick the instance size that fits your workload; larger sizes cost more per hour.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one billed hour cover, and what do I get for it?
You are billed for each hour the software runs on your chosen EC2 instance type. One hour equals one running instance-hour of that specific size. The instance provides a pre-built, ready-to-deploy image of the software, provisioned for AWS and configured for instant use.
Am I charged when the instance is stopped or paused?
The software charge meters running time only. When an instance is stopped, the hourly software fee stops accruing. Underlying AWS costs, such as storage for a stopped instance, may still apply separately. To avoid software charges, stop the instance when it is not in use.
If I move to a larger instance size, does my hourly rate change?
Yes. Each instance type has its own hourly rate. Switching to a size with more compute, memory, or network capacity applies that size's rate for the hours it runs. You are billed only for the size actually running at any given time, not a blended rate.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources.
