A lightweight EC2 Image Builder component that installs the Spillbox software for HPC clusters. The component tracks cluster compute usage and integrates with AWS Marketplace for pay-as-you-go billing.
Spillbox HPC Usage Metering Component is an EC2 Image Builder component designed for high-performance computing (HPC) environments deployed within a customers AWS account. It is intended for cloud-bursting and hybrid HPC architectures commonly used in semiconductor design, engineering simulation, and large-scale compute workloads. The component installs the Spillbox software during AMI build time and prepares the instance with the required services and dependencies for HPC environments. It is designed to be used as part of a customer-managed AMI build workflow and can be combined with a customers own base AMI and Spillbox software stack using EC2 Image Builder. Compute and worker nodes remain lightweight and optimized purely for workload execution.Spillbox environments are frequently deployed in hybrid cloud scenarios, where on-premises resources are extended into AWS through elastic cloud bursting. In these deployments, workloads may scale up rapidly, run for short durations, and scale back down when jobs complete. The controller-based architecture ensures consistent cluster coordination without requiring agents on dynamically created compute nodes, making it well suited for elastic and short-lived HPC workloads.Spillbox solutions also optimize data movement between on-premises and cloud environments by transferring only the data required for active jobs, leveraging high-performance networking and local storage to minimize latency and cost. While data may move dynamically across environments, the installed controller software focuses on cluster coordination and compute workload management within AWS.Pricing for this product is based on standard AMI hourly pricing configured in AWS Marketplace and is fully calculated and billed by AWS Marketplace. No custom usage metering, pricing logic, or billing calculations are implemented by this component. This design ensures a scalable, cost-efficient, and operationally simple solution for advanced hybrid cloud HPC architectures without impacting application workflows or performance.
Highlights
Spillbox has easy setup, enabling zero-click or single-command cloud bursting of any EDA application, requiring no workflow changes or application-specific setup.
Cloud cost reduction by 50%: Spillbox minimizes storage expenses to just 2.5% of compute costs, transferring only essential data while utilizing the cloud's local NVMe. No cost when not used.
Same performance in the cloud compared to on-premises. Automatically scales to massive workloads.
AWS Marketplace now accepts line of credit payments through the PNC Vendor Finance program. This program is available to select AWS customers in the US, excluding NV, NC, ND, TN, & VT.
Pricing is based on actual usage, with charges varying according to how much you consume. Subscriptions have no end date and may be canceled any time.
Additional AWS infrastructure costs may apply. Use the AWS Pricing Calculator to estimate your infrastructure costs.
If you are an AWS Free Tier customer with a free plan, you are eligible to subscribe to this offer. You can use free credits to cover the cost of eligible AWS infrastructure. See AWS Free Tier for more details. If you created an AWS account before July 15th, 2025, and qualify for the Legacy AWS Free Tier, Amazon EC2 charges for Micro instances are free for up to 750 hours per month. See Legacy AWS Free Tier for more details.
You pay by the hour for the compute you actually use. Each dimension maps to a specific AWS EC2 instance type, billed per hour of usage. The instance families cover general purpose, compute-optimized, memory-optimized, storage-optimized, and GPU workloads, plus bare-metal options. Within each family, sizes scale from small nano and large instances up to very large multi-xlarge and metal configurations. Hourly rates rise as instance size and capacity increase. You select the instance types that match your workloads, and metering tracks hours consumed on each. No upfront commitment applies to this usage-based structure.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one hour of a listed instance type represent for metering?
Each dimension maps to one AWS EC2 instance type. Metering counts each hour that instance runs. If you run several instances of the same type, each running hour adds to the total for that dimension. Larger instance sizes carry higher hourly rates, reflecting more compute, memory, or storage capacity.
Am I charged when an instance is stopped or when my cloud burst is idle?
Metering tracks running hours only. A stopped instance does not accrue software charges under this usage-based structure. This product activates cloud resources during peak demand and tears them down when idle, so you pay for hours the instances actually run. Underlying AWS storage fees may still apply separately.
If I use several different instance types, how do the charges combine on my bill?
Each instance type is metered and billed independently by its own hourly rate. Your total is the sum of hours consumed on each type, multiplied by that type's rate. The types you run most, and the largest sizes, drive the biggest share of your bill.
