Dimensions summary
You pay by the hour for Windows Server 2022 Datacenter, billed per running instance. Each dimension maps to a specific EC2 instance type, so your rate depends on the instance size you choose. The options fall into two families. The t2, t3, and t3a types are general-purpose burstable instances suited to lighter or variable workloads. The m3, m4, m5, m5a, m5ad, m5d, m5dn, and m5n types are steady general-purpose instances. Within each family, larger sizes carry more vCPU and memory and cost more per hour. You pay only while an instance runs.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
One hour maps to one running instance of the chosen EC2 type. The rate reflects that instance's vCPU and memory. You are billed for each hour the instance runs, measured per instance. Running two instances of the same type doubles the hourly charge.
The hourly software charge applies only while an instance runs. Stopped or powered-off instances do not accrue software charges. Underlying AWS storage fees may still apply for attached volumes, but the Windows Server 2022 Datacenter license meters running time only.
Each size within a family carries more vCPU and memory and a higher hourly rate. Switching to a larger size raises your per-hour charge. Cost scales with the instance you run, not automatically. You choose the size and change it manually when your workload needs shift.
