    This is a high-performance interactive desktop for 3D Visualization tasks. ParaView is pre-installed to support a wide range of 3D file formats. Amazon DCV provides a performant remote display connection.

    Overview

    The system comes with Ubuntu Desktop, Amazon DCV, and ParaView pre-installed and configured. This is an ideal workstation for visualization of datasets in an HPC cluster environment.

    An NVIDIA GPU is required for the desktop environment to function. Amazon DCV is free to use on EC2. For instances that run longer than 30 days, ensure that the instance can access the DCV license from S3. See the DCV documentation  for details.

    An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.

    Usage instructions

    Instructions:

    1. Launch an EC2 instance using this AMI.

    2. Connect to the instance via SSH as the user ubuntu.

    3. Set a password via the command:

      sudo passwd ubuntu

    4. In a web browser, navigate to the url below, replacing PUBLIC-IP the instance's public ip address or dns name: https://PUBLIC-IP:8443/#console 

    5. Log in as the user ubuntu with the password you set in step 3.

    6. When you see the GDM login screen, click Ubuntu and enter the same password once again.

    7. Run ParaView from the dock at the bottom of the screen.

    IAM policies: When using an instance for more than 30 days, you must make sure the instance can access the DCV license via S3. See the DCV User Guide for details: https://docs.aws.amazon.com/dcv/latest/adminguide/setting-up-license.html#setting-up-license-ec2
