You pay by the hour for a preconfigured image running Apache Tomcat 11 on Amazon Linux 2023. Pricing is tied to the Amazon EC2 instance type you choose, so there is one hourly software rate per instance size. The options span several instance families, including general-purpose, burstable, and memory-network variants, across many sizes from nano up to metal. Larger instances carry higher hourly rates because they provide more compute and memory. You select the instance that fits your workload and scale by picking a different size. AWS infrastructure charges apply separately from this software rate.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What exactly am I paying for in the hourly software rate?
You pay for a preconfigured machine image running Apache Tomcat 11 on Amazon Linux 2023. The rate covers the software setup on your chosen Amazon EC2 instance. Each instance size has one hourly software charge. This is separate from the AWS compute, storage, and network fees you pay to Amazon.
Am I charged the software rate when my instance is stopped?
The hourly software rate meters running instance-hours only. A stopped instance does not accrue the software charge. However, AWS may still bill underlying storage for the stopped instance. You resume charges when you start the instance again.
How do I scale up, and does the software rate change automatically?
You scale by launching a different Amazon EC2 instance size. The software rate follows the instance type you pick, so larger sizes carry higher hourly rates. The change is not automatic; you choose the instance yourself. You can run several instances at once, each billed separately.
