Canonical and AWS work together to make Ubuntu worker nodes available for Amazon's Elastic Kubernetes Services (EKS), allowing customers to get the best of both worlds: A fully managed Kubernetes service with the Ubuntu ecosystem under the hood.
You can also upgrade to Ubuntu Pro and activate additional security features such as FIPS mode, Expanded Security Maintenance (ESM), CIS or DISA-STIG hardening and Kernel Livepatch for getting Kernel security patches without unplanned downtime.
These images are based on the official Ubuntu Minimal LTS and include the custom Ubuntu-aws optimized kernel. They have been built specifically for the EKS service, therefore are not intended as general OS images.
To deploy Ubuntu worker nodes on EKS, you can use eksctl, EC2 Launch templates on the EKS web console, Cloudformation templates and other mechanisms.

This listing is free to use, so the software itself carries no license charge. Pricing is organized by AWS EC2 instance type, and you select the one matching your EKS worker nodes. Each dimension maps to a specific instance size and family, billed per hour of running time. The many options cover general-purpose, compute, memory, storage, and accelerated (GPU) families across sizes from nano to metal. Your cost scales with the instance you pick and how long it runs. Larger or specialized instances carry higher hourly rates, while the operating system component remains free across all of them.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one pricing dimension like m5.large or g5.24xlarge actually charge me for?
Each dimension maps to a specific EC2 instance type used for your EKS worker nodes. You are billed per hour that node runs. Since the operating system is free, the hourly rate here reflects the software charge for that instance size, which is zero for this free listing.
Am I charged when my EKS worker nodes are stopped or scaled down?
The per-hour software charge meters running time only. Nodes that are stopped or terminated stop accruing charges. Because this listing is free, no software cost applies regardless. You may still owe separate AWS fees for compute, storage, and other resources, which are billed by AWS, not this listing.
Do larger instance choices change what this listing costs me?
The instance type you pick affects your underlying AWS compute bill, not this software listing. This operating system component is free across every instance dimension, from nano through metal sizes. You can run general-purpose, compute, memory, storage, or GPU families without adding a software license charge.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.

For Ubuntu Cloud Guest it is suggested to manually configure your Security Group/Firewall settings. The 1-Click Security Group opens only port 22 so that you can access your instance via ssh using login 'ubuntu'. If you chose the 1-Click Security Group, you may change it later to enable applications using the AWS Console or API.
