Copy files to and from cloud storage on a schedule. rclone v1.75.1 on Ubuntu 24.04 comes with a daily copy timer, a checksum check script and a safe local default, and can target your own S3 bucket through the instance IAM role.

    Overview

Move files between folders and cloud storage on a schedule. This image installs rclone v1.75.1 with a daily copy timer, helper scripts for copy and checksum verification, and a local destination so you can test safely before you point it at your own S3 bucket.

Launch the approved version on t3.medium with at least 16 GiB encrypted root storage and at least 2 GiB RAM. Connect as ubuntu with AWS Systems Manager Session Manager, or restrict SSH to your administrative CIDR. First boot writes rclone.conf and environment defaults; nothing sensitive is baked into the image. rclone does not listen on a TCP port for customer traffic. Keep credentials out of recordings and tickets.

The standard software fee is described in the AWS Marketplace offer terms. EC2, EBS and data-transfer charges are billed separately. See the offer terms for applicable billing promotions.

After launch, wait for cloud-init to finish, then follow the bundled README for configuration, backup and day-2 operations. An instance role is optional until you point RCLONE_DEST at your own object-storage bucket.

Reach it from other machines: rclone makes outbound connections only, so there is nothing to open to other hosts. Use an IAM role attached to the instance for S3.

Copy-paste launch kit (role, security group, run-instances and CloudFormation): https://docs.softwaresushi.com/launch-kit/  and the Rclone Transfer Worker guide: https://docs.softwaresushi.com/rclone/

This is a repackaged open source software product wherein additional charges apply for AMI packaging, validation, maintenance and setup documentation. Nick Craig-Wood and contributors publish rclone under MIT; Software Sushi supplies the AMI recipe, pinned official linux/amd64 binary, first-boot configuration, loopback-only defaults, and setup documentation without claiming upstream endorsement.

    Highlights

    • Pinned rclone v1.75.1 official linux/amd64 binary with provenance receipts.
    • Daily copy timer with local destination defaults and checksum check script.
    • Bundled configuration, backup and day-2 operations documentation.

     Info

    Dimensions summary

You pay a single hourly software fee for the t3.medium instance size. Billing is usage-based, so charges accrue only while the instance runs. There are no tiers or add-ons to choose between; this one dimension covers the software. AWS bills EC2, EBS, and data transfer separately, plus S3 storage and requests if you copy to an S3 target. The hourly rate is fixed per running hour and does not scale with the amount of data you transfer.

    Top-of-mind questions for buyers

The software runs on a t3.medium EC2 instance. The vendor recommends an encrypted gp3 root volume of at least 16 GiB and at least 2 GiB of memory. Size the volume for the source, a second copy, and the local cache. No inbound security group rules are needed.
The hourly software fee applies only while the instance runs. A stopped instance accrues no software charge, though AWS may still bill EBS storage. The daily copy timer runs once a day for up to one hour and does not change the hourly rate.
AWS bills EC2, EBS, and data transfer separately from the software fee. If you point the destination at your own S3 bucket, S3 storage and requests are charged by AWS too. The listing covers the software only; no access keys are included.

    Amazon Machine Image (AMI)

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.

    Version release notes

rclone v1.75.1 on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS for t3.medium. Includes pinned CLI, daily copy timer, local destination defaults, checksum check script, and optional customer S3 configuration. Connect with Session Manager as ubuntu and run bash /opt/sushi/docs/demo.sh after first boot.

    Additional details

    Usage instructions

    1. Launch t3.medium (16 GiB or larger encrypted gp3, IMDSv2) with an instance profile that has AmazonSSMManagedInstanceCore and outbound HTTPS. No inbound rules are needed. Copy-paste launch kit (role, security group, run-instances, CloudFormation): https://docs.softwaresushi.com/launch-kit/
    2. Connect: aws ssm start-session --target <instance-id>. After cloud-init finishes, run: sudo -iu ubuntu bash /opt/sushi/docs/demo.sh (expect a final line ending in DEMO_PASSED).
    3. Use it: Put a file in /var/lib/rclone/include (sudo chown rclone:rclone on it), see what a copy would do with sudo -u rclone /opt/sushi/bin/rclone-copy.sh --dry-run, then run sudo -u rclone /opt/sushi/bin/rclone-copy.sh and sudo -u rclone /opt/sushi/bin/rclone-check.sh.
    4. Secrets and access: No passwords and no listening service. For S3, attach an IAM role to the instance and edit /etc/rclone/rclone.conf and rclone.env as the Configuration guide describes.
    5. Reach it from another host: rclone only makes outbound connections, so there is nothing to open. Run it over Session Manager, or SSH from your own CIDR if you prefer. Guide: https://docs.softwaresushi.com/rclone/  . Support: info@softwaresushi.com
