See Legacy AWS Free Tier for more details.
You pay by the hour for the AWS EC2 instance size you run this software on. There is no upfront commitment. Each dimension maps to a specific instance type, so your rate depends on the compute size you pick. Smaller shared-CPU instances (the t2 and t3 families) sit at one end. General-purpose families (m3, m4, m5, and their variants with local storage or network options) scale up to bare-metal sizes. Larger instances carry higher hourly rates. You control cost by matching the instance to your speed-test workload.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one billed unit represent for each dimension?
Each dimension maps to one AWS EC2 instance type running the iPerf3 Server software. You are billed per hour that the instance runs. One unit equals one hour of a single running instance at the size you selected, such as t3.small or m5.metal.
Am I charged when the instance is stopped after finishing a speed test?
The software charge meters running instance-hours only. When you stop the instance, hourly software charges stop accruing. Underlying AWS storage or other resources may still bill separately while the instance is stopped, but the iPerf3 Server software itself meters running time.
Do I need to open any network settings to reach the server after launch?
Yes. You must open TCP port 5201 in the Amazon firewall so the iPerf3 client can connect. After launch, find the instance IP address in your AWS account, then run the client against that IP on port 5201. This affects access, not billing.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
