Overview
This AMI runs Paperless-ngx, the open-source document management system, with PostgreSQL 17 and a Valkey queue on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. The container images are pinned to Paperless-ngx 3.4.2, PostgreSQL 17.11 and Valkey 9.1.3 and baked into the AMI, so first start does not depend on a registry. Paperless-ngx is an independent project and Perimattic is not affiliated with it.
Why Paperless-ngx?
Paperless-ngx turns scanned and digital documents into a searchable archive. It runs OCR on what you upload, extracts text, lets you tag documents and assign correspondents and document types, can learn to suggest those from your own documents, and keeps the original files alongside searchable PDF/A copies.
What Perimattic adds
Pinned, tested versions: Paperless-ngx, PostgreSQL and Valkey are fixed to exact tags, not 'latest', so a rebuild never changes the application behind your back.
Admin created for you, sign-up closed: during first-login setup a random 24-character admin password is generated on your server and the superuser is created with Django's own management command, before the site is published. Setup then checks that a wrong password and anonymous API requests are refused, that sign-up is closed and that only your domain name is served. The secret key is generated per instance. There are no default or shared credentials in the image.
HTTPS: Apache is configured as a reverse proxy, with WebSocket support for the live status messages, and a free Let's Encrypt certificate is requested for your domain with certbot. Paperless-ngx listens only on the loopback interface; PostgreSQL and Valkey are reachable only inside the Docker network.
Patched base: Ubuntu 24.04 LTS built through an automated EC2 Image Builder pipeline, with security updates applied at build time.
Where your documents are, and limits
Originals and archived PDFs are stored in /opt/app/media on the instance's root volume, so choose the root EBS volume size for your archive and take EBS snapshots for backup; document_exporter can also produce a portable export. OCR needs memory. When idle, the stack uses about 800 MB, and while it OCRs an 8-page 300 dpi PDF the instance used about 1.4 GB in our tests. A t3.medium (4 GB) is the recommended starting size; a t3.small (2 GB) worked for light single-user use but leaves little headroom. Paperless-ngx update checks are switched off. Password-reset and mail-rule features need an SMTP server that you configure.
Licence
Paperless-ngx is released under the GNU General Public License v3.0 (GPL-3.0); this AMI runs the unmodified upstream image. PostgreSQL is released under the PostgreSQL License and Valkey under the BSD 3-Clause licence.
Getting Started Launch the AMI and open ports 22, 80 and 443 in the security group SSH in and answer the setup prompts (domain and admin email) Open https://your-domain and sign in as admin with the password printed at the end of setup Upload documents, or copy files into /opt/app/consume to have them imported
A domain name with an A record pointing at the instance is required, because the site is served over HTTPS. Paperless-ngx with its database and queue uses about 800 MB of memory when idle, so a t3.medium (4 GB) is the recommended starting size; choose t3.large or larger for large scans, many users or heavy bulk imports.

64-bit (x86) Amazon Machine Image (AMI)
Amazon Machine Image (AMI)
An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
Version release notes
Initial release.
- Application: Paperless-ngx 3.4.2 (container image pinned, baked into the AMI).
- Base: Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, fully patched at build time, built by an automated EC2 Image Builder pipeline.
- TLS: Apache reverse proxy with a Let's Encrypt certificate requested by certbot at first login.
- Credentials are generated on the instance at first login; none are present in the image.
- A random admin password is generated at first login and the superuser is created with Django's management command; setup verifies that a wrong password and anonymous requests are refused, sign-up is closed and only the configured host name is served before the site is published.
- Application: Paperless-ngx 3.4.2 (GPL-3.0, unmodified upstream image) with PostgreSQL 17.11 and Valkey 9.1.3 (all pinned). Update checks are off; the secret key is generated per instance.
- Database and queue: reachable only inside the Docker network.
Additional details
Usage instructions
-
Launch an Instance
From AWS Marketplace, click Continue to Subscribe and then Continue to Configuration to launch the AMI.
-
Choose the Recommended Instance Type
t3.medium (4 GB of memory) is the recommended starting size: Paperless-ngx, PostgreSQL and Valkey use about 800 MB when idle and more while OCR runs. A t3.small (2 GB) worked in our tests for light single-user use, but an 8-page 300 dpi scan took it to about 75 percent of its memory. Choose t3.large or larger for large scans or many users.
-
Configure Security Group
Allow inbound traffic on the following ports:
- 22 (SSH) - terminal access for setup
- 80 (HTTP) - needed to validate your domain for the TLS certificate
- 443 (HTTPS) - access to Paperless-ngx
-
Point a domain at the instance
Create a DNS A record (for example docs.example.com) pointing to the instance's public IP before you log in.
-
Connect to the Instance
ssh -i <your-key.pem> ubuntu@<public-ip>
-
First-Login Setup
The first SSH login runs a guided setup:
- Prompts for your domain and admin email and checks the DNS A record
- Generates a random 24-character admin password, database password and secret key on your server
- Starts Paperless-ngx, Valkey and PostgreSQL and creates the superuser with Django's management command
- Checks that the password works, that a wrong password and anonymous requests are refused and that sign-up is closed
- Configures Apache as an HTTPS reverse proxy and requests a Let's Encrypt certificate
- Prints the URL and the admin credentials; they are also stored in /opt/app/access.txt (root only)
If a step fails, fix the problem shown and log in again: the setup resumes where it stopped.
-
Access Paperless-ngx
Open https://<your-domain> and sign in as admin with the generated password (view it again with: sudo cat /opt/app/access.txt). Upload documents in the web interface, or copy files into /opt/app/consume on the server to have Paperless-ngx import and OCR them.
-
Credentials
Generated on your server, never shared between customers. View them again with:
sudo cat /opt/app/access.txt
-
Manage the Services
cd /opt/app sudo docker compose ps sudo docker compose restart
Originals and archived PDFs are in /opt/app/media and the database in /opt/app/postgres: back up all of /opt/app or snapshot the volume before upgrades. Add users under Settings > Users & Groups; there is no public sign-up. Password-reset email needs an SMTP server (PAPERLESS_EMAIL_* settings in /opt/app/docker-compose.yml); without one use: cd /opt/app && sudo docker compose exec paperless python3 manage.py changepassword admin.
