Perimattic Managed Reverse Proxy Manager on AWS

     Info
    Deployed on AWS
    AWS Free Tier
Reverse proxy manager 2.16.0 (MIT) on Ubuntu 24.04 with a web interface: proxy hosts, redirections and streams on ports 8080 and 8443, the interface behind HTTPS with an administrator created for you.

    Overview

This AMI runs a web-based reverse proxy manager on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS: create proxy hosts that forward a domain name to an internal application, redirections, streams and access lists from a web interface, without editing proxy configuration files. Release 2.16.0 is pinned and baked into the AMI, so first start does not depend on a registry. Data and certificates are kept on the instance (SQLite).

How this instance is laid out (please read)

Ports 80 and 443 belong to the Apache that publishes the management interface over HTTPS with its own Let's Encrypt certificate. The sites you create in the manager are served on this instance's port 8080 (HTTP) and port 8443 (HTTPS), so open those two ports in the security group as well and point your DNS or a load balancer at them. Because port 80 is not the manager's, Let's Encrypt HTTP validation inside the manager does not work: use DNS validation in the manager (with your own DNS provider credentials) or upload your own certificates. Unknown host names on 8080 get a plain 404 and unknown names on 8443 get no TLS handshake. If you need the managed sites on ports 80 and 443 themselves, this layout is not the right fit.

    What Perimattic adds

Administrator created for you: a fresh install of the manager shows a page that lets whoever reaches it first create the administrator account. During first-login setup this AMI creates that account through the manager's own API (your admin email and a random 24-character password generated on your server) before anything is published, and checks that the password works, that a wrong password and the well-known default login admin@example.com  / changeme are refused, that nobody else can create a user and that anonymous API requests are refused. The management interface itself listens only on the loopback interface; it is reachable through Apache over HTTPS. The tests also create a proxy host, send a request for it through port 8080 to a service on the machine, and remove it again.

Pinned and tested: the application version is fixed, not 'latest', so a rebuild never changes the server behind your back. Patched base: Ubuntu 24.04 LTS built through an automated EC2 Image Builder pipeline, with security updates applied at build time.

    What you should know

The manager's container runs as root inside its own container, as upstream builds it. The API status document and the API schema answer without a login by design, and the web interface shows user avatars through a third-party avatar service chosen by the application. The manager used about 110 to 210 MB of memory in our tests, so a t3.small (2 GB) is the recommended starting size.

    Licence and attribution

Built on the open-source Nginx Proxy Manager (MIT licence). The image is unmodified. Not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by its author or by F5, Inc.; NGINX is a trademark of F5, Inc.

Getting Started Launch the AMI and open ports 22, 80, 443, 8080 and 8443 in the security group SSH in and answer the setup prompts (domain and admin email) Open https://your-domain/  and sign in with your admin email and the password printed at the end of setup Create your first proxy host; it is served on port 8080 or 8443

A domain name with an A record pointing at the instance is required for the management interface, because it is served over HTTPS.

    Highlights

    • Reverse proxy manager 2.16.0 (MIT) pinned and pre-installed: proxy hosts, redirections, streams and access lists from a web interface. Managed sites are served on ports 8080 and 8443, not 80 and 443.
    • Secure first login: the administrator is created through the API before publishing with a generated password, the default admin@example.com login does not exist, nobody else can create a user, and the interface listens on loopback only behind HTTPS.
    • Built on patched Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and supported by Perimattic: free setup assistance at aws-support@perimattic.com.

64-bit (x86) Amazon Machine Image (AMI)

    Amazon Machine Image (AMI)

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.

    Version release notes

    Initial release.

    • Application: Reverse Proxy Manager 2.16.0 (container image pinned, baked into the AMI).
    • Base: Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, fully patched at build time, built by an automated EC2 Image Builder pipeline.
    • TLS: Apache reverse proxy with a Let's Encrypt certificate requested by certbot at first login.
    • Credentials are generated on the instance at first login; none are present in the image.
    • The administrator is created through the manager's API with your admin email and a random 24-character password generated at first login, before anything is published; the default admin@example.com  login does not exist; setup verifies all of this.
    • Release 2.16.0 (MIT, unmodified official image). The management interface listens on loopback only and is published by Apache over HTTPS; the sites you create are served on ports 8080 and 8443 (not 80 and 443); unknown hosts get a 404.
    • Let's Encrypt HTTP validation inside the manager does not work in this layout (use DNS validation or your own certificate).

    Additional details

    Usage instructions

    1. Launch an Instance

From AWS Marketplace, click Continue to Subscribe and then Continue to Configuration to launch the AMI.

    2. Choose the Recommended Instance Type

t3.small (2 GB of memory) is the recommended starting size: the manager used about 110 to 210 MB in our tests.

    3. Configure Security Group

Allow inbound traffic on the following ports:

      • 22 (SSH) - terminal access for setup
      • 80 (HTTP) - needed to validate your domain for the TLS certificate
      • 443 (HTTPS) - access to Reverse Proxy Manager
      • 8080 - HTTP for the sites you create in the manager (open only if you use it)
      • 8443 - HTTPS for the sites you create in the manager (open only if you use it)
    4. Point a domain at the instance

Create a DNS A record (for example proxy.example.com) pointing to the instance's public IP before you log in.

    5. Connect to the Instance

      ssh -i <your-key.pem> ubuntu@<public-ip>

    6. First-Login Setup

The first SSH login runs a guided setup:

      • Prompts for your domain and admin email and checks the DNS A record
      • Generates a random 24-character administrator password on your server
      • Starts the manager, creates the administrator through its API, then checks that the password works, that a wrong password and the default admin@example.com  login are refused, that nobody else can create a user and that anonymous API requests are refused
      • Configures Apache as an HTTPS reverse proxy for the management interface and requests a Let's Encrypt certificate
      • Prints the URL, email and password; they are also stored in /opt/app/access.txt (root only)

If a step fails, fix the problem shown and log in again: the setup resumes where it stopped.

    7. Access Reverse Proxy Manager

Open https://<your-domain>/ and sign in with your admin email and the password printed at the end of setup (view it again with: sudo cat /opt/app/access.txt). The sites you create in the manager are served on ports 8080 (HTTP) and 8443 (HTTPS) of this instance: add those two ports to the security group when you need them.

    8. Credentials

Generated on your server, never shared between customers. View them again with:

      sudo cat /opt/app/access.txt

    9. Manage the Services

cd /opt/app sudo docker compose ps sudo docker compose restart

Data and certificates are in /opt/app/data and /opt/app/letsencrypt; back them up or snapshot the volume before upgrades. The managed sites are on ports 8080 and 8443 (ports 80 and 443 serve the management interface); Let's Encrypt HTTP validation inside the manager does not work in this layout.
