64-bit (x86) Amazon Machine Image (AMI)

    Amazon Machine Image (AMI)

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.

    Version release notes

This is latest release on Amazon Linux 2023. It also has a number of updates for RSTAPP (Restore application) for latest SAVF changes. These include

    • extraction of PF without source for match to data
    • Updated attributes from DSPF, PRTF, CMD

    Usage instructions

The virtual machine created provides a means to emulate an IBM I midrange machine. As delivered, the machine needs to be accessed via ssh to set at least one user password to be used in the emulation software. The normal user for this is qsecofr . For example

    ssh -i mycert.pem ec2-user@111.111.111.111 sudo su - passwd qsecofr

The password maximum length is 10 characters. For our example we will just set to initpass . Once the qsecofr password has been set, the operator can now connect to the emulation machine using 5250 protocol. For a normal user coming from IBM i background they would use a 5250 emulator - like TN5250 , or use the IBM i ACS solution which has an inbuilt 5250 emulator. However we also provide a basic 5250 device on the standard http port. Using a browser connect to the IP using http eg http://111.111.111.111 . Note that the port 80 needs to be open for this to work. For normal 5250 connection, then port 5250 should also be open.

After a few moments an emulation screen should appear showing showing some system details and User/Password entry boxes. Enter qsecofr in user line , then press <TAB> to move to password field and enter initpass and now press <ENTER> to login.

If password is incorrect , operator will be notified. You should make sure that the password field is blanked out (with spaces if required) before trying a new password. If login is successful , then the main menu screen will appear with some menu options and cursor placed on command line.

The operator can enter a command and press enter. or enter the number of the menu option to proceed. Note the F numbers on the bottom of the screen like F3 or F12. F3 will usually mean Exit/Go Back, and F12 cancel. These are the function keys enabled for the screen concerned. The operator can use their normal keyboard to process a function key.

If operator is familiar with IBM I, they can proceed to use commands and options. For our test purposes we will enter a few commands to check things are ok. Enter WRKACTJOB and press <ENTER> . This brings operator to active jobs screen - like a ps -ef command on Linux . F3 will exit back to main menu. The second command is DSPJOBLOG. This shows history of activity within this session.

When complete , press F3 to return to main menu and then 90 (or command SIGNOFF) to exit session.
