This is a repackaged open source software product wherein additional charges apply for a secure, ready-to-use Squid 6.14 caching web proxy. Control and speed up web access for your team or servers with a proxy that requires a login for every request, with unique passwords for every instance.
Squid is a widely used open source caching proxy for the web. It forwards HTTP and HTTPS requests on behalf of browsers, servers and tools, caches content that is requested again, and controls who may use it. Teams use it to give private servers controlled internet access, to send traffic out through one fixed IP address, and to save bandwidth on repeated downloads. This image gives you a working, locked-down proxy in minutes.
What is included: Squid 6.14 on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS with password authentication for every request, an access-control list that denies everything not explicitly allowed, a disk cache, a short landing page on port 80 and Webmin 2.670 for server administration. Requests to the instance metadata service and to private link-local addresses are blocked. Security is on by default: no password ships in the image. On first boot every instance sets its own proxy and Webmin passwords and creates its own server keys, and SSH accepts key-based login only.
What you get on top of the free software: a pre-built and tested image that is ready in minutes, a unique security setup for every server, simple scripts for changing passwords, regular image updates, and help by email whenever you need it. Squid is open source software licensed under GPL-2.0. Squid is a trademark of its respective owner. This image is an independent build by ProvenCloud.
Highlights
Ready in minutes: launch the instance, point your browser, servers or tools at port 3128 and sign in. Squid, proxy user management and Webmin are already installed and configured.
Closed by default: every request needs a proxy username and password, and nothing else is allowed through. Every instance sets its own proxy and Webmin passwords on first boot, and SSH is key-only.
Control and cache web traffic: give servers in private networks a single way out, use one fixed exit IP, cache repeated downloads and add or remove proxy users with one command.
AWS Marketplace now accepts line of credit payments through the PNC Vendor Finance program. This program is available to select AWS customers in the US, excluding NV, NC, ND, TN, & VT.
Pricing is based on actual usage, with charges varying according to how much you consume. Subscriptions have no end date and may be canceled any time. Alternatively, you can pay upfront for a contract, which typically covers your anticipated usage for the contract duration. Any usage beyond contract will incur additional usage-based costs.
Additional AWS infrastructure costs may apply. Use the AWS Pricing Calculator to estimate your infrastructure costs.
You pay an hourly software charge that runs on top of your own EC2 compute costs, billed through AWS. The many dimensions listed are not feature tiers. Each one maps to a different EC2 instance type, from small general-purpose sizes to large compute, memory, storage, and accelerated instances. The software charge is the same across all of them, so your total cost depends mainly on which instance size you pick. Choose a size that fits your proxy traffic. A free trial period applies before hourly charges begin.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What do I get for the hourly software charge on a given instance type?
You get a pre-built machine image running the Squid caching web proxy with Webmin on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. The image is closed by default, so every request needs a username and password. The hourly software charge is the same regardless of which EC2 instance type you launch.
Am I charged the software fee when my instance is stopped?
The hourly software charge meters running time, so a fully stopped instance stops accruing it. You may still pay AWS for attached storage, such as the 30 GiB root volume, while the instance is stopped. The software fee resumes when you start the instance again.
What drives my total cost — the software charge or the instance size?
Two charges combine on one AWS bill: a flat hourly software charge plus your own EC2 compute cost. The software charge stays the same across all instance types. So your instance size choice drives the variable part of your total. Pick a size that fits your proxy traffic.

Vendor refund policy
Software charges are billed hourly, only while your instance runs. You can stop charges at any time by terminating the instance or cancelling your subscription. Charges already incurred are not refundable.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.

Additional details
Usage instructions
Once the instance is running, wait for the instance health checks to pass, then allow a few minutes for the first-boot setup to finish. The proxy address is http://<instance-public-ip>:3128. Port 3128 is a proxy, not a web page: set it as the HTTP and HTTPS proxy in your browser, system or tool settings, then sign in with proxyuser as username and your instance ID with a capital leading I as password, for example I-0123456789abcdef0. Requests without this login are refused with 407 Proxy Authentication Required.
Try it from your own machine: curl -x http://<instance-public-ip>:3128 --proxy-user proxyuser:<password> https://checkip.amazonaws.com prints the proxy's IP address. The landing page at http://<instance-public-ip>/ shows these details. You can access the Webmin page at port 8000, so your URL will be http://<instance-public-ip>:8000 and use admin as username and the same capital-I instance ID as password. You can also access your instance via SSH using the username ubuntu and your Amazon private key.
Required inbound ports: 3128 (proxy), 22 (SSH), 80 (landing page) and 8000 (Webmin). Open port 3128 only to the addresses that should use the proxy, such as your office IP or your VPC range, never to 0.0.0.0/0. Allow ports 22 and 8000 only from your own IP address.
Your instance ID is shown in the EC2 console, for example i-0123456789abcdef0. Type its first letter as a capital I, for example I-0123456789abcdef0. Allow a few minutes after launch for the first-boot setup to finish before you sign in. Every instance sets its own passwords on first boot, so no two instances share a password.
Change your passwords after the first sign-in: connect over SSH and run sudo bash /home/ubuntu/iscripts/pass_proxy.sh for the proxy user or pass_webmin.sh for Webmin, from the same folder. Add or remove proxy users with sudo bash /home/ubuntu/iscripts/proxy_users.sh, and check the server with sudo squid-status.
