Topology and CMDB Trust for AWS Environments with Dynatrace

     Info
Aligns the topology observed by Dynatrace with the AWS resource inventory from AWS Config and with the ServiceNow CMDB. It addresses configuration data that no longer reflects the services, hosts, processes, dependencies and ownership visible in the monitored environment, a gap that weakens impact analysis, routing, investigation and change risk assessment. The result is a more trustworthy configuration base with clearer technical coverage and ownership per application and service.

    Overview

In an AWS environment there are three candidate sources of truth, and the value of this offer is in reconciling them rather than choosing one. AWS Config provides the authoritative AWS resource inventory, configuration history and resource relationships across accounts and Regions through an aggregator. Dynatrace, through OneAgent, Smartscape, tags, management zones and entity APIs, provides the observed runtime topology, including process, service and call dependencies that AWS Config does not describe. The ServiceNow CMDB provides the CI model, ownership and process context. AWS Organizations tag policies and AWS Resource Groups and Tag Editor, supported by the AWS Resource Groups Tagging API, establish and enforce the tagging standard that carries application, environment and owner, and that standard becomes the join key across the three sources. Monitored resource types typically include Amazon EC2, Amazon EKS, Amazon ECS, AWS Lambda, Amazon RDS, Elastic Load Balancing, Amazon S3, Amazon API Gateway and Amazon VPC components. AWS Service Catalog AppRegistry can hold the application grouping, and AWS Systems Manager Inventory adds in-guest software and patch detail for Amazon EC2 where required. The comparison runs on a schedule and produces three reconciliation outputs: AWS resources present but not monitored, monitored entities absent from the CMDB, and CIs whose ownership or tags conflict with the AWS source. Results are loaded into ServiceNow through Service Graph Connector for Dynatrace when available, or through a curated Import Set with IRE/Reconciliation rules for deduplication and data quality. AWS Config change notifications delivered through Amazon EventBridge trigger targeted reconciliation between scheduled cycles, exceptions become ServiceNow tasks assigned to the owner derived from the AWS tags, and tag coverage and drift are reported per account, Region and application. Service Mapping may extend the model for greater service-model maturity.

    Highlights

    • Three-way reconciliation between AWS Config, the Dynatrace observed topology and the ServiceNow CMDB, producing a clear list of AWS resources not monitored, monitored entities absent from the CMDB, and CIs whose ownership or tags conflict with the AWS source.
    • AWS Organizations tag policies and AWS Resource Groups and Tag Editor establish and enforce the tagging standard used as the join key, and tag coverage and drift become measurable outputs reported per account, Region and application.
    • Aligned topology improves impact analysis, routing, investigation and change risk assessment, synchronized through Service Graph Connector for Dynatrace when applicable or through curated API and IRE/Reconciliation alternatives.
