The choices span three families. The t2 and t3 sizes (medium, large, xlarge, 2xlarge) offer burstable compute. The m5 family covers fixed-performance sizes, including variants with local storage, network optimization, or higher clock speeds. Instance size and family drive your rate. Larger sizes and specialized variants carry higher hourly pricing, while smaller sizes cost less per hour.

Each rate covers a running EC2 instance with OpenSearch, an Nginx reverse proxy, and added security features. Those include a host firewall, log collection, monitoring, and automated updates. The instance type you pick sets the compute, memory, and storage behind that hourly charge.
The software rate meters running time. A fully stopped instance does not accrue the hourly software charge. Underlying AWS charges, such as storage for stopped instances, are separate and billed by AWS. You pay the software rate only while the instance runs.
