You pay by the hour for the software running on your chosen AWS EC2 instance. The many options here are all instance sizes, not feature tiers. Each carries the same pre-configured Moodle image; they differ only in compute, memory, and network capacity. General-purpose families (t2, t3, t3a, m7i, m7i-flex, m7a) suit lighter or steady workloads. Memory-focused families (r5, r5a, r5b, r5d, r5n, r5dn, r5ad) suit larger deployments. Sizes scale from nano up to metal, so hourly cost rises with instance capacity. Billing runs through your AWS account.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does the hourly rate cover, and am I charged when the instance is stopped?
The hourly rate covers the pre-configured Moodle software running on your chosen EC2 instance. Charges accrue only while the instance runs. Fully stopped instances stop the software charge. Stopped instances may still incur AWS storage fees for the attached volumes, billed separately by AWS.
What do I actually get preinstalled on the instance I select?
Every instance size ships the same image: Moodle 5.x on Debian with Apache, PHP 8.4, MariaDB and phpMyAdmin. First boot runs the installer, sets per-instance database credentials, generates a TLS certificate, and writes the admin login to a protected file on the server.
If my course load grows, how do I move to a larger instance size?
There is no automatic tier upgrade. Each size bills independently at its own hourly rate. To scale, you launch or resize to a larger EC2 instance. Your bill then reflects the new size's hourly rate for the hours it runs. General-purpose families suit lighter loads; memory-focused families suit larger deployments.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
