    Overview

    Open image

This is a repackaged open source software product wherein additional charges apply for cloudimg support services.

    Why This Image?

Deploying Snipe-IT yourself means provisioning a server, installing PHP, nginx, MariaDB, running migrations, generating secure keys, and hardening credentials - typically an hour or more of manual work. This AMI eliminates that entirely. Launch an instance and sign in to a fully configured asset-management platform within minutes, with unique per-instance credentials generated automatically and no default passwords. Unlike community Docker images or self-managed installs, you also get 24/7 professional support from cloudimg covering upgrades, SSO integration, and database administration.

    Overview

Snipe-IT is the popular free open source IT asset management system. Track hardware assets, software licenses, accessories, consumables, and components. Check items in and out to users and locations, print QR and barcode labels, run audits and reports, and drive it all through a full REST API. This image delivers Snipe-IT 8.6 fully installed and configured so a complete asset-management platform is running within minutes of launch.

    Application Stack

Snipe-IT is a Laravel application running on PHP 8.3 with OPcache, served by nginx with php-fpm. MariaDB provides the database. The Laravel task scheduler runs every minute through a systemd timer - the recommended background-jobs mode. Database migrations are already applied and the pre-flight setup is complete, so you land directly on the sign-in page.

    Secure By Default

On first boot a one-shot service generates a fresh Laravel application key, a fresh MariaDB password, and a fresh administrator password - all unique to that instance. The administrator password is written to a root-only file. The instance's own address is set as the application URL automatically. No shared or default credentials ship in the image. This approach eliminates the risk of leaked default passwords that affect many community-published images.

    Storage Architecture

Application files, uploads, and the database reside on dedicated, independently resizable EBS volumes. This lets you scale storage without reprovisioning the instance and simplifies backup strategies using AWS snapshots.

    Ready To Use

Browse to the instance address, sign in as the administrator, and start adding companies, locations, asset models, and assets. No manual wizard, no migration commands, no credential configuration required.

    Use Cases

    • Education: A school district checking out laptops and tablets to students each semester, running year-end audits, and maintaining warranty records across multiple campuses.
    • Healthcare: Tracking medical devices and IT equipment under regulatory requirements while keeping data within a private VPC for compliance.
    • Enterprise IT: Managing hardware lifecycle from procurement through disposal, enforcing software license compliance, and integrating with LDAP/SAML for single sign-on across thousands of employees.
    • Self-hosted alternative: Organizations that need data residency or cannot use SaaS asset trackers due to policy constraints.

    cloudimg Support

    Amazon Machine Image (AMI)

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.

    Version release notes

Initial release of Snipe-IT 8.6 IT asset management system.

    Additional details

    Usage instructions

Connect via SSH on port 22 as the default login user for your operating system variant (the user guide lists it per variant; on Ubuntu it is 'ubuntu'). Snipe-IT is served on port 80. Retrieve the generated administrator password with: sudo cat /root/snipe-it-credentials.txt. Browse to http://<instance-public-ip>/ and sign in with the 'admin' username and that password (the instance's address is set as APP_URL on first boot). The health endpoint http://<instance-public-ip>/health is open. Services are managed with systemctl (nginx, php8.3-fpm, mariadb); admin CLI tasks use 'sudo -u www-data php /var/www/snipe-it/artisan ...'. To enable HTTPS, follow the Let's Encrypt section of the user guide.
