You pay by the hour for the EC2 instance type you run this Oracle Database Enterprise Edition AMI on. Each dimension maps to a specific instance size, so pricing scales with the compute, memory, and storage capacity you choose. Smaller instances like t3.micro cost less per hour, while large memory, compute, or bare-metal instances cost more. You select one instance type at launch and are billed only for hours used. The software runs on Linux and the vendor recommends m5.large or larger for production workloads.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What software and configuration do I get with the hourly instance charge?
You get Oracle Database 12c Enterprise Edition 12.2.0.1 on Linux, installed at /u01 with a preconfigured ORCL sample database and Listener on port 1521. It includes helper start and stop scripts, randomly generated SYSTEM credentials, AWS CLI v2, the SSM Agent, the CloudWatch Agent, and 24/7 vendor support with a 24 hour response SLA.
Am I still charged the hourly rate when the EC2 instance is stopped?
The hourly software charge applies only while the instance runs. A stopped instance stops accruing the per-hour software fee. Underlying AWS storage, such as the root volume and the dedicated /u01 Oracle volume, may still incur separate AWS fees while the instance is stopped.
If I need more capacity, do I pay a different hourly rate?
Yes. Each dimension maps to one EC2 instance type, and you pick one at launch. To get more compute, memory, or storage, you launch a larger instance type, which carries its own hourly rate. You are billed for the hours the chosen instance runs, not for capacity you do not use.
