Mattermost: Team Collaboration on Ubuntu with Support by Meetrix
Pricing is based on actual usage, with charges varying according to how much you consume. Subscriptions have no end date and may be canceled any time. Alternatively, you can pay upfront for a contract, which typically covers your anticipated usage for the contract duration. Any usage beyond contract will incur additional usage-based costs.
Additional AWS infrastructure costs may apply. Use the AWS Pricing Calculator to estimate your infrastructure costs.
You pay by the hour for the EC2 instance size you run Mattermost on. The 13 options are all instance types, not feature tiers. They fall into small general-purpose sizes (t3.small, t3a.small), medium sizes (t2.medium, t3.medium, t3a.medium, m7a.medium), large general-purpose sizes (m4.large, m5.large, m5a.large, m6a.large), and large compute-optimized sizes (c5.large, c5a.large, c6a.large). The software itself is the same across all choices. Your hourly cost scales with the compute capacity of the instance you pick. The vendor recommends t3.small for a starting deployment.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What do I actually receive when I pay the hourly rate for an instance type?
You receive a pre-configured Mattermost server image running on the EC2 instance size you select. The hourly charge covers the software licence metered per running hour. The instance also gives you the vCPU and memory that instance type provides, which sets your capacity for concurrent users.
Am I charged when I stop the Mattermost instance?
The software licence meters running time only, so a stopped instance stops accruing hourly software charges. You can stop the instance from the EC2 console and restart it later. Note that stored data, such as EBS volumes and S3 backups, may still incur underlying AWS storage fees while stopped.
If my team grows, how do I move to a larger instance and what changes on my bill?
Scaling is manual. You choose a different instance type when launching the CloudFormation stack, or relaunch on a size with more vCPU and memory. Your hourly rate then matches that new instance type. The software is identical across sizes, so only compute capacity and hourly cost change.

Mattermost is an open-source, self-hosted team communication platform designed for privacy and data control. It offers features similar to Slack, including channels, file sharing, and integrations, while ensuring enterprise-grade security. This CloudFormation template allows you to quickly deploy Mattermost on your own AWS infrastructure. CloudFormation Template (CFT)
AWS CloudFormation templates are JSON or YAML-formatted text files that simplify provisioning and management on AWS. The templates describe the service or application architecture you want to deploy, and AWS CloudFormation uses those templates to provision and configure the required services (such as Amazon EC2 instances or Amazon RDS DB instances). The deployed application and associated resources are called a "stack."
