Dimensions summary
You pay by the hour for each running instance, with the rate set by the EC2 instance type you choose. Every dimension maps to a specific instance type, and the price scales with instance size because it is based on the number of vCPUs. Smaller instances cost less per hour; larger and specialized instances (compute, memory, storage, GPU, and bare metal) cost more. Billing is metered by the second and added to your existing AWS invoice. You select the instance type that fits your workload, and no upfront commitment is required.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
The rate covers the Ubuntu Pro software layer running on that instance type. This includes security patches for Ubuntu components and hundreds of open source applications, FIPS 140-3 and Common Criteria certified components, optional CIS and DISA STIG hardening, and Kernel Livepatch. Underlying EC2 compute is billed separately by AWS.
Ubuntu Pro pricing is based on the number of vCPUs in the instance and is metered by the second. Instances with more vCPUs, such as large compute, memory, storage, GPU, or bare metal types, carry a higher rate. Smaller instances with fewer vCPUs carry a lower rate.
Charges meter running time, since billing is by the second while the instance runs. A stopped instance is not running, so the software charge does not accrue. Underlying AWS storage fees for the volume may still apply separately from this software licence.
