You pay by the hour for each running instance. Pricing is not tiered by feature. Instead, you pick the EC2 instance type that matches your compute needs, and each type carries its own hourly rate. The list covers many families: general purpose (m, t), compute optimized (c), memory optimized (r), and storage optimized (i). Sizes range from nano and micro up to large and xlarge. Larger or more specialized instances cost more per hour. All instance types deliver the same pre-configured GitHub runner software; the only difference is the underlying hardware and its hourly price.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one hour of billing cover for a given instance type?
Each hourly rate covers one running EC2 instance of that type with the pre-configured GitHub runner software. Billing meters the time the instance runs, measured in instance-hours. Each instance you launch bills separately at its own type's rate. Running two instances at once doubles the hourly charge.
Am I charged when the runner instance is stopped or idle?
The hourly software charge applies while the instance runs. A stopped instance does not accrue the hourly software rate. Note that stopped instances may still incur underlying AWS storage fees for their attached volumes. The runner software meters running time only, not idle standby time.
How do I switch to a different instance type if my compute needs change?
You choose the instance type when launching the AMI in EC2. To change types, launch a new instance from the same subscribed AMI using a different type. Billing then follows the new type's hourly rate. All types run the same runner software, so only the hardware and hourly price differ.
