You pay by the hour for RStudio Server Essentials, with no upfront commitment. Each dimension maps to a specific AWS EC2 instance type, so your rate depends on which instance you run. The many options span general-purpose, compute-optimized, memory-optimized, storage-optimized, and GPU instance families across several hardware generations, plus sizes from nano and large up to metal. Larger instances with more CPU, memory, or accelerators carry higher hourly rates. Billing continues only while an instance runs. This software layers a support charge on open-source software, so total cost combines the software rate with your chosen instance.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What do I actually get for the hourly rate on each instance type?
Each rate covers a pre-configured RStudio Server environment with thousands of R packages and a ready-to-use user account. The instance type you pick sets the CPU, memory, and accelerator resources. Your hourly charge reflects the software support fee layered on top of open-source RStudio, not the underlying AWS compute.
Am I charged when my instance is stopped or paused?
The software rate meters only running time. When you stop an instance, the hourly software charge stops accruing. Fully stopped instances may still incur AWS storage fees for attached volumes, but the RStudio Server Essentials software fee applies while the instance runs.
How does my total cost combine the software fee and the AWS instance cost?
Two charges apply at the same time. You pay the hourly software fee for the instance type you select, plus the separate AWS charge for running that EC2 instance. They add together on your bill. Choosing a resource-heavy instance raises both charges.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
