Overview
Aguilar Secured AL2023 is a repackaged version of the official Amazon Linux 2023 AMI, hardened and pre-configured for teams who want a secure baseline server without doing the security setup work themselves.
This is a repackaged open source software product. Additional charges apply for ongoing image maintenance, security hardening, and optional support - the underlying operating system remains Amazon Linux 2023, unmodified in its core functionality.
What's included
- Fail2ban - protects SSH and other services from brute-force attacks by automatically banning suspicious IPs after repeated failed attempts
- Automatic security updates - critical security patches are applied without manual intervention, via AL2023's native dnf-automatic
- Pre-configured security baseline - root SSH login disabled, password authentication disabled (key-only access), aligned with common hardening best practices
- Built on official Amazon Linux 2023 - no changes to the core OS, kernel, or package management - you get everything AL2023 normally provides, plus this hardening layer
What your charges cover
- Ongoing image maintenance and validation of security patches
- Additional hardening and pre-configuration work
- Optional support, available directly from Aguilar Technology Productions LLC
Who it's for
- Teams and individuals who want a secure server baseline without manually configuring Fail2ban and update automation on every new instance
- Anyone standardizing on a hardened Amazon Linux 2023 image across multiple EC2 launches
- Developers and small businesses who want reduced setup time and an improved security posture out of the box
Getting started
Launch this AMI like any other EC2 instance, connect over SSH as ec2-user, and you're already running with Fail2ban active and automatic security updates enabled - no post-launch configuration required.
Highlights
- Fail2ban is pre-installed and active out of the box, automatically banning IPs after repeated failed SSH login attempts - no manual jail configuration needed before your instance is protected.
- Automatic security updates keep your instance patched against known vulnerabilities without manual intervention, using Amazon Linux 2023's native update automation.
- Built on the official, unmodified Amazon Linux 2023 base - you get full AL2023 compatibility plus a hardened baseline (root login disabled, key-only SSH) ready in minutes.

64-bit (x86) Amazon Machine Image (AMI)
Amazon Machine Image (AMI)
An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.

Usage instructions
Launch the AMI. Select your preferred instance type (see the pricing table for supported sizes). When launching, select or create an EC2 key pair; you'll use it to SSH into the instance. Use the recommended security group rule allowing SSH (TCP/22) - restrict the source to your own IP for better security from the start where possible.
After the instance is running, copy its Public IPv4 address from the EC2 console.
Connect via SSH: ssh -i /path/to/your-key.pem ec2-user@<public-ip-or-dns>
Replace the key path and IP/DNS with your own instance's values. The default user is ec2-user.
Update your security group (strongly recommended): after your first successful login, restrict the SSH source in your security group from 0.0.0.0/0 to your specific IP address or corporate network range (e.g., 203.0.113.25/32). This meaningfully reduces exposure to automated scanning even with Fail2ban active.
Fail2ban is pre-installed and will automatically ban IPs with repeated failed SSH attempts - no configuration needed. Automatic security updates are enabled and applied without manual intervention. If you install web applications on this instance, open ports 80 (HTTP) or 443 (HTTPS) in your security group as needed.
