You run this Community Edition WAF on your own AWS EC2 instances, and the software itself is free. Billing is hourly per running instance, so your only cost tracks the EC2 instance type you choose. Each listed dimension matches a specific EC2 instance size, from small general-purpose types up to large compute-, memory-, storage-, and accelerator-optimized machines. Pricing scales with the capacity of the instance you select: larger instances cost more per hour. Pick the instance size that fits your traffic and performance needs, and pay only for the hours it runs.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one billing unit represent, and am I charged when the instance is stopped?
Each unit is one running EC2 instance of the type you select, billed per hour. The software itself is free, so the hourly charge tracks your chosen instance size. Fully stopped instances stop accruing hourly software charges, though underlying AWS storage fees for the volume may still apply.
What happens to my cost if I switch to a larger instance type?
You are billed per hour for whichever instance type runs. Moving to a larger compute-, memory-, storage-, or accelerator-optimized instance raises the hourly rate for the hours it runs. There is no automatic upgrade; you choose the instance size when you launch, and cost follows that choice.
Does the free software cover multiple websites, or is it limited to a single site?
The Community Edition is a self-hosted free WAF intended to protect a single website. The software carries no license fee; you pay only the hourly rate for the EC2 instance it runs on.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
