OpenJDK (Open Java Development Kit) is a free and open-source implementation of the Java Platform, Standard Edition (Java SE). It was initiated by Sun Microsystems in 2006 and is now maintained by Oracle and the OpenJDK community. OpenJDK serves as the official reference implementation of Java SE since version 7. The core components of OpenJDK include the Java Virtual Machine (JVM), the Java Class Library, and the Java Compiler (javac). The HotSpot JVM is responsible for executing Java bytecode, while the Java Class Library provides a comprehensive set of standard libraries essential for Java applications. The Java Compiler translates Java source code into bytecode. OpenJDK is licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL) version 2 with a linking exception, allowing developers to link their own code with the OpenJDK libraries without having to release their source code under the GPL. OpenJDK supports various operating systems, including Linux, macOS, Windows, FreeBSD, OpenIndiana, and OpenVMS. It follows a time-based release model, with new feature releases every six months, ensuring that developers have access to the latest features and improvements in a timely manner.
