Overview
Research teams increasingly need to analyse sensitive data — health, social, longitudinal cohort, or otherwise restricted — using modern ML and self-hosted language models, without that data ever leaving a controlled boundary. Off-the-shelf AI services and shared analytics workspaces rarely satisfy the data-sovereignty, ethics, and governance requirements that come with this kind of data.
Assertio delivers a Trusted Research Environment: an isolated analytics enclave on AWS where approved researchers can work with sensitive datasets and run compute-intensive models entirely inside your account. Access is provided through Amazon WorkSpaces virtual desktops and private network connectivity (Transit Gateway / VPN), with no inbound internet exposure. High-specification EC2 provides GPU-class compute for locally hosted LLMs and custom ML code — models are installed in-environment, so no data is sent to any external or API-based AI service.
Data governance is built in rather than bolted on. Datasets sit in tightly IAM-scoped S3 buckets and FSx storage; egress is blocked by default, with outbound traffic limited to authorised software updates; and data extraction and output release follow a controlled, coordinator-gated process. CloudTrail and CloudWatch provide end-to-end logging, monitoring, budget and technical alerting, and cost dashboards. The entire environment is defined in Terraform for reproducible, auditable deployment, and supports formal authority-to-operate and data-retention/archiving lifecycles.
Each engagement is scoped to the institution's datasets, data-residency and ethics requirements, researcher access model, and toolchain (e.g. Anaconda, Python, CUDA, PyTorch/TensorFlow, VS Code). Assertio works with your research, IT, and information-security teams from architecture and ATO through deployment to ongoing operation, monitoring, and cost optimisation — delivered into your AWS environment or hosted within ours.
