Overview
This Amazon Machine Image provides CentOS Stream 10 as a general-purpose Linux server for Amazon EC2. The image is initialized from CentOS Stream 10 with an Ansible baseline that updates installed packages, sets the system clock to UTC, and configures chrony for time synchronization. The EPEL and CRB repositories are enabled. The locale is set to LANG=C. Common administration packages are installed, including curl, wget, vim, unzip, rsync, sysstat, lsof, net-tools, iotop, iftop, and plocate.
SSH is configured for key-based administration. Direct root login is disabled. The server limits authentication attempts and concurrent sessions, applies an idle-session timeout, records verbose SSH logs, and displays a login banner. X11 forwarding, TCP forwarding, and SSH agent forwarding are disabled. Allowed cipher, key-exchange, and MAC algorithms are restricted to current algorithms. Local accounts use a password-quality policy, password aging, and an inactive-account lock. Sudo activity is logged. Kernel settings enable address-space layout randomization, restrict ptrace, disable core dumps, and apply common IPv4 network protections, including reverse-path filtering and rejection of ICMP redirects. SELinux is set to disabled.
The Amazon CloudWatch agent is installed and left stopped. Attach an instance role with CloudWatch permissions and start the agent when you want to collect metrics or logs. The image does not include default passwords or preloaded credentials. Launch the instance with an Amazon EC2 key pair and connect over SSH as the centos user. Review the instance security group before opening port 22.
