XFCE Linux Desktop in Browser on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS by ProvenCloud [IN]

     Info
    Sold by: ProvenCloud
    Deployed on AWS
This is a repackaged open source software product wherein additional charges apply for a secure, ready-to-use Linux desktop in your web browser. Use a full XFCE desktop with Firefox, a file manager, terminal and text editor from any computer over HTTPS, with no client software to install and unique passwords for every instance.

    Overview

This image gives you a lightweight Linux desktop that runs in the cloud and appears in your web browser. It is handy for browsing from a clean cloud machine, running graphical Linux tools close to your AWS resources, reaching private systems inside your VPC, or giving yourself a desktop you can use from any laptop. The XFCE desktop is fast and simple, and KasmVNC streams it to the browser over HTTPS.

What is included: the XFCE 4.18 desktop on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS with KasmVNC 1.5.2 for browser access, Firefox, Thunar file manager, a terminal and Mousepad, nginx serving the desktop over HTTPS, and Webmin 2.670 for server administration. Keyboard, mouse and clipboard work in the browser. The desktop session keeps running when you close the tab, so your windows and files are waiting when you return. Security is on by default: no password ships in the image. On first boot every instance creates its own desktop and Webmin passwords, HTTPS certificate and server keys. No raw VNC or RDP port is exposed, Webmin listens only on the server itself, and SSH accepts key-based login only. This is one shared desktop for the people who have its password, with sudo rights. Audio is not included.

What you get on top of the free software: a pre-built and tested image that is ready in minutes, a unique security setup for every server, simple scripts for changing passwords and taking backups, regular image updates, and help by email whenever you need it. XFCE and KasmVNC are open source software licensed under GPL-2.0. Ubuntu, XFCE, KasmVNC and Firefox are trademarks of their respective owners. This image is an independent build by ProvenCloud.

    Highlights

    • A desktop in any browser: open the instance's address over HTTPS and get a full XFCE desktop with keyboard, mouse and clipboard support. Nothing to install on your computer.
    • Useful apps ready: Firefox, Thunar file manager, a terminal and the Mousepad text editor are installed, and your desktop, files and open windows stay where you left them between visits.
    • Secure by default: HTTPS from the first boot, a random password for every instance, no VNC or RDP port open to the internet, SSH with keys only, and the Webmin panel reached through an SSH tunnel.

    Dimensions summary

You pay by the hour for the EC2 instance type you choose. The software charge is one dimension: the hourly rate for running this desktop image. Every listed option is an EC2 instance size, grouped by family such as compute (c), memory (r), general purpose (m and t), storage (d, i), GPU (g, p), and specialized types. Larger instance sizes carry higher hourly software charges. You also pay your own AWS EC2 compute and storage costs separately, billed by AWS. A 5-day free trial applies before hourly charges begin.

    Top-of-mind questions for buyers

One hour maps to one running EC2 instance of the type you select. The software charge is metered per instance-hour, and larger instance sizes carry higher hourly rates. One shared desktop runs per instance, reachable through a web browser over HTTPS, with sudo rights for all users.
The hourly software charge meters running time only. A stopped instance does not accrue software charges. You may still pay AWS storage costs for the 30 GiB root volume while the instance is stopped. Those EBS and EC2 costs are billed separately by AWS.
The software charge covers the pre-built desktop image only. It bundles open-source software under GPL-2.0, so no licence key is needed. Your AWS EC2 compute and EBS storage costs are billed separately by AWS. Both appear on your usual cloud bill, with no separate contract.

    Vendor refund policy

Software charges are billed hourly, only while your instance runs. You can stop charges at any time by terminating the instance or cancelling your subscription. Charges already incurred are not refundable.

    Amazon Machine Image (AMI)

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.

    Usage instructions

Once the instance is running, wait for the instance health checks to pass, then allow up to 15 minutes for the first-boot setup to finish. Connect over SSH with your key pair: ssh -i /path/to/key.pem ubuntu@<instance-public-ip>, then run sudo pc-credentials show to see the random passwords created for this instance. They are not your instance ID, and no two instances share them.

Open https://<instance-public-ip>/ in your browser and accept the one-time warning for the server's self-signed certificate. When the browser asks for a username and password, enter admin and the password labelled desktop. The XFCE desktop opens in the browser tab. Allow clipboard access when your browser asks, so copy and paste work both ways. The desktop runs as the ubuntu user with sudo.

Required inbound ports: 22 (SSH), 80 and 443 (the application; port 80 redirects to HTTPS). For security, allow port 22 only from your own IP address. Keep every other port closed.

Change your passwords after the first sign-in: connect over SSH and run sudo bash /home/ubuntu/iscripts/pass_desktop.sh for the desktop or pass_webmin.sh for Webmin, from the same folder. To check the server, run sudo systemctl is-active provencloud-desktop nginx webmin.

Webmin is not open to the internet. To use it, keep this SSH tunnel open on your own computer: ssh -i /path/to/key.pem -N -L 18000:127.0.0.1:8000 ubuntu@<instance-public-ip>, then open http://localhost:18000/  and sign in with admin as username and the password labelled webmin.

To back up the application on the same server, run sudo pc-backup create /var/backups/application.tar.gz and copy the file to encrypted storage outside the instance, because it contains passwords. To restore it, run sudo pc-backup restore /var/backups/application.tar.gz --confirm-restore. The backup covers Desktop, Documents, Downloads, the browser profile and desktop settings.

After a stop and start the instance gets a new public IP unless you attach an Elastic IP; your data and passwords are kept. For production, point your own domain at the instance and replace the self-signed certificate with a trusted one.
