Overview
NetBox is the leading open source network source of truth, combining IP address management (IPAM) and data center infrastructure management (DCIM) in one platform. Document sites, racks, devices, cables, circuits, IP prefixes, VLANs, and VRFs in a single place, then drive network automation from it through REST and GraphQL APIs. This preconfigured NetBox AMI is built for network engineers, infrastructure teams, data center operators, managed service providers, and DevOps teams. It launches on AWS in minutes, so you can skip manual installation and keep your network data on your own infrastructure.

Instant Deployment: Launch a fully configured NetBox server in minutes using a ready-to-use AMI and CloudFormation template, with PostgreSQL, Valkey, a background worker, an Nginx reverse proxy, and Let's Encrypt SSL set up for you. The database ships pre-migrated for a fast first boot, each instance generates its own database, cache, and application secrets, and the admin password is set from the value you choose at launch.
IP Address Management (IPAM): Plan and track IP prefixes, IP ranges, individual addresses, VRFs, route targets, VLANs, VLAN groups, and ASNs, with hierarchical prefixes and automatic utilization reporting.
Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM): Model regions, sites, locations, racks, devices, modules, interfaces, and power feeds, with rack elevations that show exactly what is installed where.
Cable and Circuit Tracking: Document physical cabling end to end with cable tracing, and record providers, circuits, and terminations for your WAN and transit links.
Virtualization Inventory: Track clusters, virtual machines, and virtual interfaces alongside physical infrastructure, with IP addresses assigned to both.
REST and GraphQL APIs: Read and write every object through a full REST API and a GraphQL API, and connect NetBox to Ansible, Terraform, and other network automation tools as the source of truth.
Customization and Extensibility: Extend the data model with custom fields, tags, custom links, config contexts, export templates, and plugins, and trigger webhooks and scripts with event rules.
Change Logging and Permissions: Every change is recorded in the change log, and object-based permissions let you control exactly who can view or edit each part of your network data.
Database Backups to S3: A backup script dumps the NetBox PostgreSQL database and uploads it to your S3 bucket. Run it on demand or schedule it with cron.
Version: 4.7.3
Operating System: Ubuntu 26.04
NetBox gives your team one accurate, searchable record of the network, from IP space to racks and cables, with no per-device or per-seat subscription fees. Deploy it on AWS in minutes and keep your network data under your control. For detailed setup steps, see the installation guide: https://meetrix.io/blogs/netbox-developer-guide/
Highlights
- Unified IPAM and DCIM: Manage IP prefixes, addresses, VRFs, and VLANs alongside sites, racks, devices, cables, and circuits in one network source of truth, with rack elevations and cable tracing.
- Automation-Ready APIs: Read and write every object through full REST and GraphQL APIs, trigger webhooks and scripts with event rules, and extend the data model with custom fields, tags, and plugins.
- Self-Hosted and Ready in Minutes: Launch NetBox with PostgreSQL, Valkey, a background worker, an Nginx reverse proxy, automatic SSL, and S3 database backups, with per-instance secrets generated on first boot.

NetBox Deployment with IPAM and DCIM Network Source of Truth
This deployment launches NetBox on a single EC2 instance using a CloudFormation template. The stack creates a VPC with a public subnet, the instance with an Elastic IP, a security group that opens HTTP and HTTPS and restricts SSH to your chosen IP range, and an IAM role that allows Route53 DNS validation for Let's Encrypt SSL and database backups to your S3 bucket. On the instance, NetBox 4.7.3 runs with Docker Compose as five containers: the NetBox web application and API, a background worker for jobs, webhooks, and housekeeping, PostgreSQL 18 for network data, and two Valkey instances for the task queue and cache. The AMI ships an empty, pre-migrated database, so first boot is fast. Each instance generates its own database, cache, and application secrets on first boot, and the admin user is created with the AdminPassword parameter. The application is available over HTTP on the Elastic IP straight away, and Nginx serves HTTPS on your domain once the certificate is issued. A backup script dumps the database and uploads it to S3, and it can be scheduled with cron. After the stack completes, open the URL shown in the stack Outputs and sign in as admin with the password you set to start adding sites, racks, devices, and IP prefixes. This architecture provides a secure, private network source of truth with simple management and backup workflows.
CloudFormation Template (CFT)
AWS CloudFormation templates are JSON or YAML-formatted text files that simplify provisioning and management on AWS. The templates describe the service or application architecture you want to deploy, and AWS CloudFormation uses those templates to provision and configure the required services (such as Amazon EC2 instances or Amazon RDS DB instances). The deployed application and associated resources are called a "stack."

IAM Role is set up and configured with the necessary permissions to assume the role for the NetBox service. The IAM Policy is created and responsible for access Route53 and create Letsencrypt SSL certificates and backing up data to the S3 bucket.
Access the application via a browser at http://<your domain name> or http://<Public IPv4 address>. Product will try to create SSL certificate when its deploying, if domain hosted on route53. If the automatic SSL creation unsuccessful then you have to point domain name into server ip, ssh into server and run /root/certificate_generate_standalone.sh. Admin email using for SSL generation.
