You pay by the hour for RHEL 7 with Patch Guard, billed per running Amazon EC2 instance. There is no single flat rate. Instead, the rate matches the EC2 instance type you choose. Options span many families, including general-purpose (m, t), compute-optimized (c), memory-optimized (r, x, u, z), storage-optimized (d, i, h), and accelerated computing (g, p, inf, trn, f). Within each family, larger sizes (from nano and medium up to metal and 96xlarge) cost more per hour. Your total scales with instance size and hours run. You can stop charges by stopping the instance.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
You get a Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 machine image with Patch Guard, preconfigured with updates, firewalls, and network protocols. The hourly software rate covers the image running on the Amazon EC2 instance type you select. You launch it with one click on AWS.
The hourly software charge applies only while the instance runs. When you stop the instance, the software charge stops accruing. Note that underlying AWS resources, such as attached storage, may still incur separate AWS fees while the instance is stopped.
Two charges apply per running hour. One is this product's software rate, which varies by instance type. The other is the standard AWS EC2 charge for that instance. Both meter the same running hours and appear together. Larger instance types raise both charges.
